Quick question for anyone running a combine right now: could you say, today, how many bushels are in the bin versus already sold?

If the answer is “roughly,” you’re not alone. Harvest is the busiest stretch of the year, and records are usually the first thing to slide. A few minutes at the end of each week makes a big difference:

• Log every load with its scale ticket
• Keep a running total of what’s on hand and what’s been sold
• Note any unpriced grain or open contracts

Here are four things worth doing this month:

Confirm employee addresses so W-2s go to the right place the first time.
Collect W-9s from every contractor you paid this year, while they're still easy to reach.
Clean up your vendor list. Merge duplicates and close out the ones you no longer use.
Reconcile your bank accounts monthly. Small mistakes are easier to find when there are fewer of them.
