Employee exits used to come in waves, big layoffs, easy to plan around. Now they trickle out constantly: reorgs, performance cycles, RTO-driven departures, contractor churn. That means device recovery can't be an occasional cleanup project anymore. It needs to be a standing process that runs every single week.

Somewhere between 20% and 40% of laptop return requests to remote employees never get a response. No laptop, no answer, no resolution. If your offboarding process still relies on someone eventually mailing it back on their own, that's a real gap, and a real security exposure sitting in someone's home office.

Right-to-repair laws just took effect in Colorado, Washington, Oregon, and Nevada this year. Manufacturers now have to provide the parts, tools, and documentation needed to actually fix electronics, instead of locking that down. For retired IT equipment, that means more devices can be properly refurbished and resold instead of scrapped. Real progress for the circular economy side of ITAD.

Traditional data center racks were built for 5 to 10 kilowatts of power. AI compute racks now demand 20 to 60 kilowatts, and hyperscale environments push 80 to 100. That's not something you fix with a quick upgrade, a lot of older facilities simply can't support that load, which is why full decommissioning is becoming the default instead of an incremental refresh.

The global data center decommissioning services market hit $12.95 billion this year, and it's projected to reach nearly $20 billion by 2032. This isn't a niche corner of IT anymore, it's a real, fast-growing industry, driven almost entirely by AI infrastructure turnover.

Retired GPU accelerators can lose 40% or more of their resale value within just 60 days of the retirement decision. If you're sitting on AI infrastructure you've decided to replace, the clock is already running, waiting to "get around to it" is a real financial decision, whether you mean it to be or not.

Enterprise servers used to run 5 to 7 years before replacement. AI infrastructure is compressing that down to 18 to 36 months. That's not a small shift, it turns decommissioning from a once-in-a-while project into something that needs to live in your annual budget planning, every year, going forward.

A growing number of state privacy laws now explicitly treat improperly disposed equipment the same way they'd treat a network breach, same notification requirements, same penalties. If your organization's breach response plan only covers hacking and phishing scenarios, it's missing a real and expanding category of risk.

A lot of organizations still sanitize SSDs the same way they'd sanitize an old spinning hard drive. That's a problem, and it's part of why NIST updated SP 800-88 to Revision 2 last year: it directly addresses modern storage like NVMe drives and self-encrypting drives, which need fundamentally different sanitization approaches than magnetic media. If your ITAD provider hasn't updated their procedures for this, that's worth asking about.

More organizations are asking for data destruction to happen on-site, before drives ever leave the building. The reasons: chain-of-custody concerns, compliance requirements in regulated industries, and zero-trust security models that now extend to physical media, not just networks. If your current process ships drives off-site with no direct oversight, it might be worth reconsidering.
