Coca-Cola spent real money two weeks ago to look... the same, everywhere.

Not lazy. That was the plan.

On July 20, they rolled out a unified visual system across 200+ markets, using an AI tool built with Adobe that automatically keeps every version of that logo on-brand.

Here's the part I want stuck in your head: refresh and rebrand are not the same move. A refresh sharpens what people already recognize. A rebrand resets it to zero.

I watch small businesses reach for the second one when they only need the first. Their logo isn't broken. Their website, their Instagram, and their business card just stopped agreeing on who they are.

A logo just cost a CEO her job. Cracker Barrel modernized its mark, the internet revolted, and last month (July 2026) the CEO who pushed it stepped down. If you're even thinking about touching your brand this year, read this before you spend a dollar.

Here's what everyone got wrong about that story: the problem was never the logo. It was treating a logo swap as a rebrand.

A brand isn't a mark. It's the promise people already carry about you. They changed the wrapping without altering the promise, so it read, "we're embarrassed by what you loved."

A logo doesn't build a brand. A system does the voice, the experience, the through-line from your storefront to your website to your DMs. Change the logo and skip the system, and you don't look modern. You look lost.

The rebrands that land and the ones that get mocked split on exactly this: did the identity come from a strategy, or a design whim?
