During these trying times it may be helpful to be particularly mindful of cybersecurity concerns. We are predicting a increase in email and phone scams, many of which are using fear and uncertainty about Covid19 and the economy as psychological trigger points. These guys are really going low these days, some what we have heard of –
“Get rich schemes” for stocks or essential oil supplements purporting to cure the disease.
Phone apps and websites with supposed outbreak maps. While it would be tempting to download a new app showing where the outbreaks are or what supermarkets do /don’t have important items like milk-bread-eggs.. please don’t)
The scammers resort to non-computer ways like just using robo-calling, hoping to catch people off guard.

Certainly be cautious of the site links. Many will be fake.

The CDC (https://cdc.gov) and NYSDOH (https://coronavirus.health.ny.gov/) have what we believe to have the most up-to-date information for the public. While Google does a decent job keeping scammers out of search engines, the scammers are absolutely working as hard as they can and buying ad space to push out malware and scam websites based on common searches about the virus.

As the nation's health protection agency, CDC saves lives and protects people from health, safety, and security threats.

Small businesses need the support of a technology partner to remain secure and competitive. Large corporations have dedicated tech departments. MSP's (Managed Service Providers) give small and mid-sized businesses those same services scaled to meet the small business owner's unique needs.

Company security isn't solely a technology issue. Along with social phishing (people who call your company or home trying to convince you to give them access to your information and/or computer systems), you also have to think in terms of physical security. Putting payments with checks in your mailbox (home or business) and assuming it will be the mail carrier that will take them out of your mailbox and deliver them to the place you intend, is the least secure form of payment. It's too easy for scammers to take those pieces of mail out of your mailbox and use your bank account and routing information to get access to your funds. When possible, utilize secure online payment systems (using complex and unique passwords!), or if that isn't possible, bring your mail that contains banking information to the post office and/or hand it directly to your mail carrier.

QUEENSBURY -- State Police warned this week of a scam that has cost local banks tens of thousands of dollars and caused numerous local business owners significant angst.

The economy of cybercrime is built on access. Whether that be access to financial accounts, trade secrets, or personally
identifiable information, those with the keys hold the most power, and therefore, are the most valuable targets. It makes sense
that cybercriminals would go after those with the highest access. It also makes sense that those at the top seem insulated,
but nothing could be farther from the truth. Whale and spear phishing campaigns are a lot more sophisticated than standard,
run-of-the-mill phishing attacks, and are designed with upper management and executives in mind! Everyone is a target and
everyone benefits from learning as much as they can to improve their awareness.
