The largest issue facing datacenter builds is the inability of utility companies to provide electricity fast enough, particularly in areas with established hubs.

Local opposition (Not In My Back Yard) against the construction of energy-intensive data centers driven by concerns of power consumption, environmental impacts and noise is also playing a part.

Labor shortages are also a major factor slowing the build of U.S. data centers, even as demand and investment surge.

As of late 2025, the U.S. faces a 439,000-worker gap in the construction sector, with the most acute shortage in skilled trades critical to data centers — especially electricians, low-voltage technicians (fiber and copper), critical facility operators, and building automation specialists.

BEAD – AI Data Centers – Advanced Technologies drive fiber growth

The Broadband Equity Access and Deployment initiative has moved from proposals to funding across the United States. There are nearly 3,000 new data centers planned. In a recent article from RVA, LLC 2.3 times more fiber is needed in the U.S. to support AI performance, scalability, and security. This increase is necessary to meet the growing demands of AI applications on hyperscale data centers, which are expected to see at least 3x increase in capacity by 2029.
