Power BI Tip: Make report filters work across pages

Ever open a dashboard, filter it to a particular month or region, and then move to another page—only to find that the filter has disappeared?

Power BI has a feature called Sync slicers that can keep selected filters consistent across multiple report pages.

Why it matters:

* Managers can compare the same region or time period across different views.
* Reports become easier to navigate.
* Teams spend less time questioning whether two pages are showing the same slice of data.

A dashboard isn’t just about displaying numbers. It’s about helping people make consistent, confident decisions.

At iTeachXL, a division of Cerullo Consulting, we help businesses get more value from Excel, Power BI, and their data—without adding unnecessary complexity.

Excel Tip: Turn recurring data into an Excel Table

Still copying new monthly transactions into a spreadsheet and hoping your formulas and reports capture every row?

Try this:

1. Click anywhere inside your data.
2. Press Ctrl+T.
3. Confirm that your data has headers.

Excel Tables expand as you add rows, provide consistent column names, and make it easier to build formulas and reports that adapt as your data grows.

It’s a small change that can make recurring reporting more reliable and easier to maintain.

At iTeachXL, a division of Cerullo Consulting, we help businesses get more value from Excel, Power BI, and their data—without adding unnecessary complexity.

Your Business Has Data. Do You Have Answers?

Many businesses already have plenty of data in Excel files, accounting systems, CRM platforms and operational reports.

The challenge is getting those numbers to tell a consistent story.

Can you quickly answer:

* Which customers are most profitable?
* Where are costs increasing?
* Are we on track to meet our targets?
* What changed since last month—and why?

Excel and Power BI can help bring that information together, but the starting point is understanding the business questions that matter.

At iTeachXL, I help businesses improve reporting, automate repetitive processes and turn their existing data into information they can use to make better decisions.

You may not need another full-time employee. You may need experienced help solving a specific reporting problem.

Power BI Tip: Show the Change, Not Just the Total

A dashboard that tells you sales were $2 million last month is useful.

A dashboard that tells you sales were $2 million, down 12% from the previous month, and identifies which products or regions drove the decline is much more valuable.

When designing a Power BI report, consider including:

* Current performance: Where are we today?
* Comparison: How does that compare with last month or our target?
* Trend: Are we improving or falling behind?
* Explanation: Which products, customers or departments are driving the result?

The goal isn’t to fill a page with charts. It’s to help management understand what changed and decide what to do next.

At iTeachXL, I help businesses improve reporting, get more value from their data, and build practical Excel and Power BI solutions.

A Dashboard Is Only Valuable If It Changes a Decision

Businesses don’t need more reports just to have more reports.

They need to know:

* Where are we missing our targets?
* Which customers or products are becoming less profitable?
* What is driving the change?
* Where should management focus its attention?

Excel and Power BI can help answer those questions—but the starting point is understanding the business problem, not choosing a chart.

At iTeachXL, I help businesses improve their reporting processes, get more value from their existing data, and make management information easier to use.

You may not need another full-time employee. Sometimes you need experienced, flexible help solving a specific data problem.

Power BI Tip: Start With the Decision, Not the Dashboard

When a business asks for a new Power BI dashboard, the first question shouldn’t be:

“What charts do you want?”

It should be:

“What decision are you trying to make?”

A good management dashboard might help answer:

* Are sales on track?
* Which customers are becoming less profitable?
* Where are costs increasing?
* Which locations or departments need attention?
* Are we likely to miss our target?

Once those questions are clear, the right visuals become much easier to choose.

Power BI is a powerful tool, but the value isn’t in having more charts.

The value is making important business information easier to understand and act on.

Excel Tip: Stop Rebuilding the Same Report Every Month

If someone on your team is opening last month’s Excel report, copying data, changing formulas, fixing formatting and repeating the same steps every month, you don’t really have a reporting process.

You have a monthly ritual.

A simple first step toward improving it is to separate:

Raw data → calculations → final report

Keep the source data in a consistent table, keep your calculations separate, and make the report pull from those structured inputs.

That makes the process easier to maintain—and much easier to eventually move into Power Query or Power BI when the business outgrows Excel.

The goal isn’t to eliminate Excel.

The goal is to stop wasting skilled employees on repetitive spreadsheet work.

Your dashboard shouldn’t just tell you what happened. It should help you decide what to do next.

A lot of business reports are very good at showing last month’s numbers.

Sales were $1.2 million.

Expenses were $850,000.

Gross margin was 29%.

Useful information—but what happens next?

A better BI approach asks:

What changed?
Why did it change?
Is it significant?
Who needs to act?

That’s the difference between a report and a decision-making tool.

Power BI, Excel and modern analytics tools can help businesses get there, but the technology is only part of the solution.

The starting point should always be the business question.

DAX Tip: A Good Business Metric Should Answer a Question

DAX can calculate much more than simple totals.

But the most useful measures usually start with a business question.

Instead of asking:

“What DAX formula should I use?”

Start with:

“What do I need management to understand?”

For example:

* Are sales improving compared with last year?
* Are we meeting our margin target?
* Which customers are driving the change?
* Where are costs increasing?

Once the business question is clear, the right calculation becomes much easier to design.

That’s an important principle in Power BI:

The goal isn’t to build complicated calculations. The goal is to turn business questions into useful answers.
