Just Because It’s an App Doesn’t Mean It’s Private

We download apps every day — for work, photos, communication, or convenience — but most people don’t realize just how much access these apps really have.

📱 Some apps can:
• Read your messages or usage logs
• Access your microphone, camera, and photo gallery
• Track your exact location — even when you’re not using them
• Collect data that can be analyzed or shared with AI systems

When you tap “Allow,” you might be granting more access than you ever intended — and once it’s granted, it’s nearly impossible to know where that data goes.

🔒 How to Protect Yourself:
✅ Review app permissions in your phone’s settings
✅ Only grant access that’s truly necessary
✅ Keep personal and work apps/devices separate
✅ Turn off location and background permissions when not needed
✅ Remember: if it connects online, it can be monitored or stored

📲 How to Restrict App Permissions

📱 On iPhone (iOS):
1️⃣ Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → App Privacy Report or Permissions
2️⃣ Tap Camera, Microphone, Photos, or Location Services
3️⃣ Choose “Ask Next Time,” “While Using the App,” or “Never.”
4️⃣ For photos, select “Selected Photos Only” instead of “All Photos.”
5️⃣ Review permissions every few months — iOS updates can reset them.

🤖 On Android:
1️⃣ Go to Settings → Apps → [Choose the App] → Permissions
2️⃣ Tap each category (Camera, Location, Microphone, etc.)
3️⃣ Select “Allow only while using,” “Ask every time,” or “Don’t allow.”
4️⃣ You can also check Settings → Privacy → Permission Manager to view all apps at once.
5️⃣ Disable background location and activity tracking unless truly needed.

💭 Final Thought:
Privacy isn’t automatic — it’s something we all have to actively protect.
Before installing or granting permissions, stop and ask:

“Does this app really need that much access to my phone or my life?”

“Selected photos” means only photos you perosnally select are viewable by the application.

Stay cautious. Stay informed. Stay private.

Always check app reviews and developer credibility in the App Store or Google Play.
• Be wary of apps that require unnecessary permissions or subscription pop-ups right away.
• iPhones and Androids already have built-in cleanup tools:
• iPhone: Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Recommendations
• Android: Settings → Storage → Free up space

⚠️ FRAUD ALERT FRIDAY ⚠️

URGENT: The "Geek Squad Refund" email scam is hitting inboxes across Ohio this week!

Here's what the scam looks like:
📧 You get an email claiming to be from "Geek Squad" or "Best Buy"
💰 Says you're owed a refund of $300-$500
📞 Provides a phone number to "cancel the charge"
🎣 When you call, they ask for remote access to your computer

🚩 RED FLAGS:
• You never used Geek Squad services
• Email has spelling errors or weird formatting
• Sender email doesn't match official domain
• They pressure you to act immediately
• They ask for remote computer access

✅ WHAT TO DO:
1. DELETE the email immediately
2. Never call numbers in suspicious emails
3. If you're unsure, go directly to BestBuy.com (don't click email links)
4. Report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov

Real companies will NEVER ask for remote access via email. When in doubt, hang up and call the official number yourself.

🔐 SECURITY TIP WEDNESDAY 🔐

Did you know that 81% of data breaches happen because of weak or reused passwords? Let's fix that today!

Your Password Power-Up Checklist:
✅ Use at least 12 characters (longer is stronger!)
✅ Mix uppercase, lowercase, numbers & symbols
✅ Never reuse passwords across accounts
✅ Use a password manager (we recommend them!)
✅ Enable two-factor authentication everywhere

🎯 Pro Tip: Create a "passphrase" instead of a password. Example: "Coffee@7am&Tacos@Noon!" is way stronger than "Password123" and easier to remember.

⚠️ Change these passwords IMMEDIATELY if you're using them:
• "password" or "123456"
• Your birthday or pet's name
• Anything you've used for 2+ years

Your digital security starts with strong passwords. It takes 5 minutes to update them but could save you thousands in identity theft.
