What a week! 🎤✨

The CEL team was out and about at multiple conferences happening across the country! Chelsea Janke kicked things off in Texas, speaking in Dallas before heading to Houston, while Kelly May took the stage at Finalsite University here in Minnesota.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended our sessions, joined the conversations and connected with us throughout the week. We hope you walked away with practical ideas, fresh inspiration and takeaways you can bring back to your schools and communities.

We always love the opportunity to learn alongside school communicators and education leaders. Always grateful to be part of the conversation! 💙

Special shoutouts:

Gen Z, Millennials, and Gen X walk into a website… 💻

Gen Z says, “Why is this taking so long?”
Millennials say, “Where’s the context?”
Gen X says, “Can someone just tell me what I need to know?”

And somewhere, a web team opens another tab titled “generational preferences.” 😅

But maybe we’re asking the wrong question. Instead of designing a website around what we *think* a generation wants, what if we designed around what people are actually trying to do?

✅ Find an answer.
✅ Complete a task.
✅ Make a decision.
✅ Move on with their day.

Generational insights can be useful. They shouldn’t become the whole strategy. Because good websites don’t make people think, “Wow, this really understands my age demographic.”

They make people think, “Oh good. I found it.”

More on that in our latest blog: https://www.celpr.com/gen-z-millennials-and-gen-x-walk-into-a-website/

Your staff are making AI flyers. They're fun! They're colorful!

That might actually be the problem. 👀

AI makes it easier than ever to create something in seconds. It also makes it easier for your school brand to slowly turn into 47 fonts, six versions of the logo, and whatever AI decided looked fun that day.

And it looks unmistakably AI. And eventually, like every other organization out there. And it probably doesn't meet any accessibility requirements. 😭

So what do you do?

Probably not ban AI. You build better guardrails.

We break down how in our latest blog, along with practical ways to protect your brand without becoming the flyer police.

And if this is your kind of thing, our school communications newsletter is full of ideas like this every month: branding, websites, AI, accessibility, enrollment marketing, family communication, and the occasional mildly unhinged take.

When times get tough, be a goldfish. ✨🐠

Goldfish supposedly have short memories, which is exactly why Ted Lasso tells his players to be one: don’t let one bad moment ruin the next one.

School communications could use a little of that energy.

A rough board meeting. A post that didn’t land. A newsletter mistake. A comment section that went completely off the rails.

Learn from it. Fix what needs fixing. Then move forward. Because one hard moment doesn’t have to define the next one.

Set a timer. Open your website. Prepare to question every “click here” link you’ve ever written. 👀

Website accessibility can feel like a massive undertaking, but you can learn a lot in just 15 minutes.

CEL’s free Website and Digital Content Accessibility Checklist helps you take a quick look at:

✅ Text and readability
✅ Images, alt text and video captions
✅ Navigation and mobile usability
✅ Forms and interactive elements
✅ Important information trapped inside PDFs

It’s not a complete accessibility audit. It is a practical place to start, spot quick improvements and identify what may need a closer look.

What happens when families stop searching your website and start asking AI?

Chelsea will break down how AI-powered search, chatbots, and recommendation engines are changing which content gets found, why clear structure and plain language matter more than ever, and how schools can stay visible without losing authenticity.

📅 Monday, July 20

Happy World PR Day to the people behind the messages, relationships, reputations, and plans (that somehow need to be finished by 3 p.m.).

PR is often reduced to press releases and publicity. But the real work is much bigger.

It’s listening before speaking. Understanding what people need to know. Building trust before it is urgently needed. Helping organizations communicate clearly when the answer is complicated, emotional, or still unfolding.

AI can help us work faster. It cannot replace judgment, empathy, context, or the relationships that make communication credible.

Today, we’re celebrating the people who bring all of that to the work—and who know that good PR is rarely about getting the most attention.

It’s about earning trust.

Is your marketing really the problem?

Your logo is cute. Your ads are running. Your website has tasteful little animations. Meanwhile, the phone has been ringing into the void since Tuesday, the contact form submits directly to Narnia, and three potential customers are still waiting for a reply from someone named “info@.”

And now we’re talking about increasing the ad budget?

Bestie. More leads for whom?

Marketing cannot keep dragging people through the front door just for your customer experience to hit them with a folding chair. We can promise that you’re responsive, welcoming and easy to work with, but eventually someone at the organization has to respond, welcome them and be easy to work with.

We love advertising money. Deeply. Passionately. Perhaps too much. But before we spend another dollar, let’s make sure the current leads are not decomposing in an inbox nobody checks.

Sometimes the problem is not awareness.

Sometimes nobody is answering the phone.
