Most people never hear this part…

That standard setup screen on a new computer quietly logs more than you might expect.

Imagine writing a personal letter while someone in the corner secretly copies down every sentence you cross out.

Microsoft Windows machines often arrive pre-configured to send detailed diagnostic information back to home servers so engineers can spot bugs.

The trade-off is that your everyday app usage and system habits get logged along the way.

You can cut down on that extra reporting by adjusting a single preference yourself.

> Open your main system settings and click on Privacy & security.

> Find the Diagnostics & feedback section to review what data is being shared.

> Switch off optional diagnostic data to limit how much extra information leaves your device.

This adjustment will not block essential security updates or basic system maintenance.

It simply stops the extra background reporting you never explicitly agreed to hand over.

Have you ever dug into what your operating system sends back home?

šŸ”’ 3 Simple Ways to Keep Your Home Wi-Fi Secure

Your home Wi-Fi connects just about everything these days—computers, phones, TVs, smart devices, and even work devices. Taking a few simple steps can help keep your network more secure.

1ļøāƒ£ Use a strong, unique Wi-Fi password – Avoid using names, addresses, or passwords you use for other accounts.

2ļøāƒ£ Keep your router updated – Router firmware updates often include important security fixes.

3ļøāƒ£ Set up a guest network – Give visitors access to a separate network instead of sharing the password for your main Wi-Fi.

A few small changes can make a big difference in keeping your home and devices protected.

Interesting read from SANS, especially since I’ve been working with several SANS resources recently as part of my cybersecurity coursework.

One thing that stood out to me is the importance of not relying on AI simply because it can produce an answer or identify a potential vulnerability. AI can be an incredibly useful tool in cybersecurity, but there still needs to be someone behind it who understands the technology, validates the findings, and can determine the actual risk.

The more I work with cybersecurity, both through my education and through Monomoy Technologies, the more I see AI as another tool in the toolbox—not a replacement for technical knowledge, experience, and human judgment.

For businesses, this is especially important. Technology can help identify potential security problems, but understanding what those findings actually mean and determining the appropriate response still requires human knowledge and judgment.

Definitely an interesting read for business owners and anyone working in technology or cybersecurity.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing offensive security, but it has not changed the standard that matters most: a finding has to be proven before it becomes useful. AI-assisted tools can read code quickly, generate payloads, summarize attack surfaces, explain unfamiliar APIs, and run repetitive....

A few simple cybersecurity steps can go a long way for a small business.

I’m Matthew, owner of Monomoy Technologies. Here’s a quick cybersecurity checklist you can tackle today:

• Use strong, unique passwords for your accounts
• Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) whenever possible
• Secure your business Wi-Fi with a strong password
• Keep your computers, phones, and software up to date
• Make sure important business files are being backed up

Cybersecurity doesn’t always have to be complicated or expensive. Taking a few basic precautions now can help reduce the risk of compromised accounts, lost data, and unnecessary downtime later.

If you’re a small business in Plymouth or on Cape Cod and aren’t sure where to start, Monomoy Technologies can help review your current setup and identify areas that may need attention.

Is your internet dropping at home? Here’s a simple checklist you can run through now to troubleshoot intermittent connections in Cape Cod homes: 1) Check your ISP status and reboot the modem, 2) Move your router away from thick walls and place it higher-coastal construction can block signals, 3) Update router firmware and device network drivers, 4) Try a wired connection to isolate Wi‑Fi issues, 5) Enable a backup (mobile hotspot or secondary ISP) for critical needs. Try these steps, and if the problem persists I’ll come to your home for a hands‑on visit-my team pairs network fixes with cybersecurity best practices to keep you connected and protected. Cybersecurity isn't just about firewalls and antivirus software—it's also about having the right policies and procedures in place.

Today I completed a cybersecurity policy for a business, helping establish clear guidelines to reduce risk, protect sensitive information, and strengthen its overall security posture. Well-written policies provide employees with a framework for handling technology securely and help organizations prepare for potential cyber incidents before they happen.

Whether it's technology consulting, cybersecurity guidance, or helping businesses improve their IT practices, I enjoy helping organizations build a stronger foundation for the future.
