Multi-factor authentication is one of the most important account security measures a business can implement.
But cybersecurity shouldn't stop there.
Attackers continue developing techniques designed to get around authentication controls. Social engineering, repeated authentication requests, stolen sessions and compromised devices can create additional opportunities.
That's why businesses need layers of protection.
Strong authentication should work alongside secure devices, appropriate access controls, employee education, monitoring and a clear process for responding to suspicious activity.
MFA makes accounts harder to compromise.
A layered security strategy makes your organization harder to compromise.

Microsoft 365 may be at the center of your business, which also makes protecting it important.
When was the last time someone reviewed your environment?
Take a closer look at who has administrator privileges. Check whether former employees still have active accounts. Review external file sharing and confirm that multi-factor authentication and appropriate access policies are in place.
Don't forget about recovery, either. Understand what information is protected, how it can be restored and what would happen if important data were accidentally deleted or compromised.
Microsoft provides powerful security capabilities, but those capabilities still need to be configured and managed appropriately.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month is a great time for a Microsoft 365 security review.

MYTH.

Cybercriminals don't have to personally select your business before you become a target.

Automated tools can scan large numbers of organizations for exposed systems, vulnerable software and compromised credentials. Phishing campaigns can also reach thousands of inboxes at once.

That means being a smaller company doesn't automatically make you less visible.

For small and midsize businesses, cybersecurity should focus on reducing opportunities for attackers.

Multi-factor authentication, patching, employee awareness, secure backups, access controls and ongoing monitoring can all help reduce risk.

The better question isn't, "Why would anyone target us?"

It's, "If someone tried, how prepared would we be?"

"Look for spelling mistakes" isn't enough phishing advice anymore.
AI can help criminals create polished emails with professional language, convincing formatting, and personalized messages. A phishing email may look remarkably similar to something sent by a colleague, vendor, or trusted company.

Instead of relying on appearance alone, employees should pay attention to context.
Was the request expected? Is someone suddenly asking for credentials, money, or sensitive information? Does the link actually lead where it claims? Is the sender asking you to bypass a normal business process?

When something feels unusual, verify the request through another trusted communication method.
A professional-looking email isn't necessarily a legitimate one.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, but businesses can't think about cybersecurity just once a year.

Every login, email, shared document, cloud application, and connected device can affect your organization's security.

This month is a good opportunity to ask some important questions.
• Are employees prepared to recognize today's phishing attempts?
• Are accounts protected with more than passwords?
• Does your business know what to do if an incident occurs?
• Could you restore critical operations if systems suddenly became unavailable?

Cybersecurity doesn't require employees to become security experts. It requires good technology, clear policies, and people who know what to do when something doesn't look right.

Use Cybersecurity Awareness Month to start those conversations.

Many employees use Teams only for meetings.
Meanwhile, features like shared channels, task management, collaborative document editing, and meeting recordings can save hours every week.
Sometimes the biggest productivity gains come from using tools you already have more effectively.

Great conversations happen when business owners come together to share experiences, challenges, and ideas.

On September 23rd, Jason Comstock of Clarity Technology Solutions had the opportunity to speak at the Union County Chamber of Commerce’s Plain City Business Association meeting about 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 & 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀.

The peer group portion of the event brought the topic to life, giving attendees the opportunity to connect, exchange perspectives, and learn from one another. It was a great reminder that some of the most valuable business insights can come from conversations with people who understand the challenges of running and growing a business.

Thank you to the Union County Chamber of Commerce and the Plain City Business Association for bringing local business leaders together and creating space for these important conversations.

Check out a few photos from the peer group discussions!
