Some productions are more than a show—they’re an engineering challenge. And we love those.
Last weekend, we were thrilled to be part of the Cathedral of Learning Light Show, celebrating the path to possible and 100 years of the Cathedral of Learning. What the audience saw was a stunning visual experience. What happened behind the scenes was months of planning, design, testing, logistics, and some seriously heavy equipment.
Our Project Manager, Noland, coordinated everything from equipment acquisition and labor to generator rentals, scaffolding, tents, and heavy machinery.
Here’s a look at what went into making the show happen:
🎥 12 projectors. 600,000 lumens. One continuous image.
We built a custom scaffolding structure to support 12 projectors, each positioned at a different height and angle. Each projector produces 50,000 lumens and weighs enough that we needed a specialized vehicle just to get them into position.
Behind the projectors, a video rack from Quince Imaging handled the heavy lifting—parsing out which projector displayed each portion of the image and precisely blending the edges so 12 individual projections became one seamless visual across the Cathedral.
🔊 Audio engineered for the space.
We deployed RCF HDL Series line array speakers in four hangs: HDL26 arrays on the two interior towers and HDL6 arrays on the two exterior towers. Using EASE Focus software, we modeled and calculated speaker angles before installation. Each tower was also equipped with an FBT subwoofer, with Kuzar K-57 lifts used to safely position the arrays.
🧠 The real work starts long before show day.
Our team takes a highly scientific approach to production. We research, design, build 3D models, and project onto a 3D model of the Cathedral weeks before the audience ever sees the show. We even conduct a test using a single projector before scaling up the full system.
Then comes setup. Testing. Rehearsal. Adjustments. More testing.
The day before the public show, we rehearsed the full experience. Each day of the event, our team arrived hours before sundown to make adjustments, run system checks, and make sure every connection and component was exactly where it needed to be.
Because spectacular productions don't happen by accident.
They happen when talented people obsess over the details—from concept to ex*****on, we’re researching, designing, testing, checking, rechecking, and engineering every piece of the experience. And when the lights come on, you see the result.
What an incredible project—and an incredible team to bring it to life.
