We joined business leaders from across the country, in collaboration with the , to meet with U.S. senators, members of Congress, and their staff to advocate for small businesses.

Access to capital is essential for entrepreneurs. Black business owners often face greater challenges in obtaining traditional funding. Credit is crucial for managing cash flow, scaling operations, and driving growth.

We need policies that protect small businesses, expand equitable access to credit, preserve rewards programs, and limit excessive transaction fees. These measures will enable entrepreneurs to innovate, create jobs, and strengthen communities.

Investing in interns is investing in the future—fueling innovation today while developing the leaders of tomorrow. Here's what our intern Souhardya Adhikary had to say about his internship at Make It Home Safe.

3 months ago, I began my internship at Make It Home Safe Inc.®, excited to contribute and learn from impactful projects. Looking back, this experience has been an incredible opportunity for growth, both technically and professionally.

During my internship, I had the chance to work closely with the development team across both the backend and frontend. On the backend, I was part of the team that developed services in NodeJS, working with AWS DynamoDB and PostgreSQL for data management, while integrating these systems through AWS Lambda, which served as the backbone of our projects. I also contributed to initiatives involving AWS S3 for profile, video, and audio storage, AWS SES for automated email communication, and AWS Textract for scanning and processing license plate data. Additionally, I collaborated on efforts using AWS Rekognition and the IDScan SDK for OCR-based driver license verification, ensuring accurate data extraction and validation.

On the frontend, I worked with the team on portal creation, helping design user-friendly and intuitive interfaces that connected seamlessly with backend services. After the pilot launch, I also contributed insights on the app’s design and researched how machine learning could be integrated into the application for future updates, exploring ways to make the product smarter and more adaptive.

It was also a great pleasure to spend the summer working at Make It Home Safe Inc., not only because of the technical challenges but also because I had the unique opportunity to be featured on WTAE Hearst Pittsburgh as we ran the pilot of our application. This experience allowed us to test the software in real-world scenarios, identify potential pitfalls, and strengthen the product to be future-ready for the market.

I am especially grateful to Carlton Vreen and Pamela Vreen for their leadership, vision, and support throughout my internship, as well as to the entire Make It Home Safe team for welcoming me and guiding me during this journey.

This experience has not only expanded my technical skill set but also deepened my appreciation for mission-driven innovation. I’m excited to take these lessons and experiences forward into the next stage of my journey.

As I wrap up this chapter, I am excited to head back to Carnegie Mellon University for my final semester, taking with me the skills I have gained, the lessons I have learned, and the memories I will always cherish.
