We are currently hiring for a Computer Testing and Repair Technician to evaluate qualifying electronic materials for potential resale. They are responsible for identifying, evaluating, troubleshooting, testing and repairing desktops, laptops and many other gadgets for resale.

This role has the change to learn how to work with anything and everything that comes through our doors. What this means in practice is that sometimes you will be testing LCD computer monitors, while other times you will be tinkering with cell phones and laptops. If having a variety of work that is new almost every day/ week excites you, then this is the job for you.

ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL OUTCOMES OF RESPONSIBLY RECYCLING YOUR EWASTE .. SAVE THE OKAPI AND ITS NATURAL RAINFOREST HABITAT IN THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO!

AN OLYMPIC FEAT: Coltan is a mineral used in cell phones and other small electronics, but those small electronic devices also happen to contain materials used to create the Olympic medals: gold🥇, silver🥈,and bronze🥉.

Mining for this mineral in the Congo rainforest is accelerating deforestation and threatening critically endangered habitat of the indigenous mountain gorilla and exotic okapi.

So when Japan set the goal of making the 2020 Olympics (postponed until 2021 and happening now!) the most sustainable in history, they called upon their citizens to donate their old small electronics to be recycled and used to create the metals.

It took 2 full years to collect enough devices, but they were up for the task. In the end, 79,000 tons of small electronics, including 6.21 million cell phones, were recycled and turned into the ~5,000 medals needed for the games. That’s a lot of coltan recycled and okapi habitat preserved!

Congratulations Japan! If sustainability was an Olympic event, you’d win the gold medal.

The Current State of Corporate America's Approach to Environmental Responsibility and eWaste Recycling

Most of the action taken within the United States to monitor electronics recycling specifically comes from Consensus Driven Programs – capitalism’s answer to environmentalism. As the public and businesses alike become increasingly invested in sustainability, the incentive to operate as a certifiably ‘green’ company grows.

In the United States, the bulk of eWaste* "regulation" takes place self-imposed by the industry upon itself, rather than being imposed by outside governmental bodies. It is moreso "the right thing to do' for the environment and our communities - but also the right thing for company reputation, company branding, as well the security of business critical company and customer data.

The Basel Action Network (BAN) works in accordance with the Basel Convention to attempt to encourage E-waste recycling to be done responsibly and not simply dumped beyond the borders of the first world. Civilian activist groups – such as Greepeace, have become increasingly involved in the world of waste disposal and recycling. Non-governmental organizations like the EPA, Basel, and Greenpeace, utilize growing public awareness to set international standards for the disposal of hazardous waste, including E-waste.

More On The History Of Recycling And Environmental Responsibility in the United States:

E-waste and Electronics recycling is a relatively new field when considered by itself, so it is important to situate its emergence in the larger history of waste disposal and recycling in the US.

The EPA’s 2001 report on the 25 year-old RCRA provides a quick look at what passed for sustainability in 1960s America. The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) is the sole federal legislation in operation in the US that deals with the disposal of hazardous waste, serving as a “cradle-to-grave management system” for solid and hazardous wastes - and E-waste falls within this category.

Skipping forward slightly – in March 2015 President Obama signed an Executive Order entitled “Planning for Federal Sustainability in the Next Decade,” which specifically addresses E-waste recycling and disposal in the United States. The order focuses mostly on energy sustainability, but includes a section entitled Electronics Stewardship, which lays out several goals dealing with E-waste designed to encourage recycling and responsible disposal of electronic products.

The National Strategy for Electronics Stewardship (NSES) has four stated goals: first to incentivize the development of greener electronics in the first place; second, to push the federal government to lead by example in terms of sustainability; third, to increase the safe handling of used electronics within the United States; and fourth, to reduce the harm done by American E-waste in developing nations around the world.

More On The History Of Recycling And Environmental Responsibility in the United States: The 1989 United Nations Basel Convention

World “awakening of environmental awareness and corresponding tightening of environmental regulations in the industrialized world, leading to increasing public resistance to the disposal of hazardous wastes" began in the 1970s and 1980s, culminating in the 1989 United Nations Basel Convention.

As a result, 170 member countries signed on with The UN Basel Convention - which tracks the movement and disposal of toxic waste across the globe.

While the United States was not one of the 170 countries who ratified the Basel Convention when it debuted in 1992, the US’s current waste policy is largely based upon the 1976 Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA).

The RCRA imposes “strict standards on anyone who generates, recycles, transports, treats, stores, or disposes of hazardous waste.” The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act is the sole federal legislation in operation in the US meant to deal with the disposal of hazardous waste, serving as a “cradle-to-grave management system” for solid and hazardous wastes, and eWaste falls within this category.

The Saga of the Khian Sea and an Introduction into The History Of Environmental Awareness, Responsibility And Recycling

In the United States, the bulk of eWaste* "regulation" takes place self-imposed by the industry upon itself, rather than being imposed by outside governmental bodies. It is moreso "the right thing to do' for the environment and our communities - and also the right thing for company reputation, company branding, as well the security of business critical company and customer data.

The history of the waste products produced by our increasingly technologically capable and trash producing society is hardly a glamorous one - as related in the Story of the Khian Sea. But at its core, it reads as a history of the evolution of increasingly tightening definitions of waste - and ultimately the corresponding self-corrective behavior on the part of US governments and businesses as to the downstream treatment of our waste trails.

The significance today of the Khian Sea story is that this incident sits at a major turning point in the developing history of the final disposition of waste in general. The ping-ponging of this ship across the globe - looking to "illegally" unload its toxic incineration ash - was the result of a careless municipal waste-incineration program in a time when there was very little awareness or regulation concerning the disposal of potentially toxic waste.

The Khian Sea incident is widely acknowledged as an impetus for the United Nations Basel Convention, which still today continues to be influential in the world of waste disposal and eWaste recycling. The original 1989 United Nations Basel Convention took place as a result of “the awakening of environmental awareness and corresponding tightening of environmental regulations in the industrialized world, leading to increasing public resistance to the disposal of hazardous wastes." 170 member countries signed on with The UN Basel Convention, which tracks the movement and disposal of toxic waste across the globe.
