Why Now
The independent driving economy is facing a structural inflection point. Autonomous vehicle platforms are scaling aggressively across the exact markets HUM operates in.

Waymo alone is targeting over a million rides per week and has raised its valuation toward $100 billion, with expansion into 26 of the top 30 US metros underway. Uber and Lyft, the platforms drivers depend on today, are simultaneously the ones integrating AVs into their networks.

Uber's own leadership has described a hybrid future that blends human drivers and robotaxis into a single marketplace, and even Uber has cited data showing one AV can displace roughly four human drivers.

Drivers on these platforms have no ownership over that transition; the marketplace decides the mix, not the driver.

At the same moment, regulatory and compliance complexity for independent operators is intensifying state by state, as AV rules, insurance requirements, and licensing frameworks are actively being contested and rewritten.

HUM sits at the convergence of both pressures: it gives independent drivers and fleets the governance, risk, and compliance infrastructure to operate their own branded businesses — with full regulatory, insurance, and permitting support — so they're not structurally dependent on a platform that may deprioritize them.

The sooner drivers build that independence, the better positioned they are for whatever the platform decides next.

The moment a driver and a regular rider exchange numbers, agree on a schedule, or settle on a price that works for both, the platform becomes unnecessary. So the system is engineered to prevent exactly that relationship, because it's the one relationship the platform can't take a cut of.
