Being released some time during the first half of this year:
THE WILD THYMES
Mind bending music from 1966 and 1967 featuring members of Goose Creek Symphony, Last Friday’s Fire and Superfine Dandelion.
From the mind of Ritchie Hart (Charlie Gearheart), in late 1967 incubated in the late night hours of spec time at Audio Recorders of Arizona, with engineer Tim Ramsey, and everyone bonding in a "let's try this" frame of mind. With creative inspiration from Mike Condello and Bill Spooner (Warren S. Richardson). This was a short lived “studio creation band,” that rarely played together in clubs, creating these amazing "pop-psyche fuzz garage rock" songs, 10 songs written by Hart and guitarist Bob Knisley and two George Harrison cover songs -- Tax Man and If I Needed Someone.
Hart and Knisley were formerly of Ritchie Hart and The Hartbeats, one of the premier Phoenix combos of the early 1960s. Hart had even had some success in 1959 with a Duane Eddy tribute named "The Great Duane". He went into the military in 1963 and when he returned in 1965, he reunited The Hartbeats. But by 1966, Hart was fronting the faux Brit band Volume IV, then The Present Daze, who morphed into The Wild Thymes.
By 1968, he had recruited Paul Howard, Bob Henke, Ed Black and Mike McFadden and began writing songs for the first Goose Creek album, in a completely different direction for sure, and The Wild Thymes tapes were left to gather dust on a shelf at Audio Recorders. Why this project was not released at the time is a mystery now, considering the high-quality music they laid down. The music is stunning to hear after all these years.
Wild Thymes was Ritchie Hart /guitar and vocals, Bob Knisley / guitar, Richie Metzendorf / bass, Dennis Kenmore / drums; and with Mike Condello / guitar and vocals, Ray Trainer / bass and organ and Steve Forman / percussion.
The liner notes were written by Grammy-nominated music historian Alec Palao.
