This Is Why We're Thorough

This gaming PC came in crashing, and we traced it to a power connection. We could have stopped there once the crashes ended, but a full diagnosis showed the graphics card running far hotter than it should, which pointed to failing thermal paste and, left alone, a shorter life for the card. When we opened it up, the center of the chip was nearly bare! We repasted the card and added an exhaust fan, and temperatures dropped significantly.

High temperatures are a known cause of shutdowns and expensive graphics card failures. Telling a customer "it'll need new paste at some point" isn't enough. They need to know the risks if they don't.

I've been on the other side of this. Years ago, I took something into a shop outside our industry. They mentioned a couple of issues to keep an eye on, but didn't explain the risks of declining those repairs, or that declining them meant no warranty on the original repair. I found that out on the final invoice, and when I brought it up, I was told this was common practice and I should have known.

Communication is everything, and it has to happen before you decide! You're paying for a diagnosis. You're paying for us to be thorough. We'd rather you fully understand any issues with your device and the risks involved, so nothing comes as a surprise and you can make an informed decision. This was brought in for freezing and crashing during games. The storage drive disappeared from the BIOS entirely after it crashed. The drive passed every health check, but those can miss a failing controller, so instead of just swapping it, we kept testing. The real cause was a poor connection in the RGB power extenders on the graphics card. We also replaced old, dried-out thermal paste and cut the core to hotspot temp gap in half and brought the overall temps down drastically. This one is back to running like it should!

Customer only paid our diagnostic fee. Swapping parts gets expensive and doesn't guarantee a fix. Testing and verifying everything does. One happy gamer!
