THE SMARTPHONE JUST PASSED THE RADIO RECEIVER IN THE CAR FOR HOURS TUNED

Your station’s next listener may arrive through a smartphone. Are you ready?
Among Americans ages 13–34, mobile devices now account for 46% of in-car audio time, compared with 43% through an AM/FM receiver, according to Edison Research at SSRS.

But device choice doesn’t tell the whole story. AM/FM stations, including their streams, still account for 70% of ad-supported listening in the car.

For broadcasters, the takeaway is simple: your stream deserves the same attention as your transmitter.

Someone listening to your station through CarPlay or Android Auto is still your listener. They deserve clear, consistent audio, accurate song information and artwork, and a connection they can count on.

That takes reliable connectivity, properly configured audio processing, continuous monitoring and a backup plan when something fails.

You put a lot into making your station worth listening to. MK Technical Services can help make sure it sounds great and stays available—over the air and online.

Tomorrow’s listener may not ask for “103.7.” They may simply ask for “that station”—and let the dashboard decide how to deliver it.

We've updated fccpassword.com with new FCC guidance on the September 29 EAS cybersecurity password requirements — clarified this week via the FCC's Public Safety Bureau and shared through the Alabama Broadcasters Association. Key updates: the password rule doesn't apply to all IP-connected equipment (only EAS/STL/program-stream equipment), every device needs its own unique password, and equipment that can't do 15 characters can use alternative authentication instead.

We also added a Passphrase option to the free generator — a multiword passphrase (like Harbor-Lumber-Flagship-Stucco) is fully compliant under the clarified rule, as an alternative to a random character string.

🚨 8 MORE DAYS UNTIL THOSE PASSWORDS EXPIRE…

Well, sort of.

On September 29, 2026, the FCC's new cybersecurity requirements for broadcasters take effect.

If your station uses passwords to secure covered equipment, those passwords must:

🔐 Be at least 15 characters long
📖 Contain no dictionary words
♻️ Never be reused across other accounts, equipment, applications, or services
🚫 Replace any factory/default passwords

And it doesn't stop with your EAS box. The rules also cover STL equipment and remotely managed equipment that routes, processes, or inserts content into your station's programming.

Broadcasters must also keep security-related firmware and software updates current and protect covered equipment with appropriate firewalls or network segmentation.

We've made the password part easy.

Generate a random password designed to meet the FCC's new password requirements. Just remember: use a different one for every device.

Need help with the rest?

The broadcast engineers at MaxxKonnect can help evaluate your facility, identify equipment affected by the new rules, review remote access and network security, update and secure equipment, and help get your station ready for the September 29 deadline.

We're broadcast engineers. We understand what happens when that "random network box" you're about to firewall is actually carrying your program audio. 😎
