GLITTER GREMLIN #10

YOU DON'T NEED MORE MOTIVATION.
YOU NEED TO DO THE DAMN THING ANYWAY.

We talk about motivation like it's something we're supposed to wake up with every morning.

"I just need to get motivated."

"I've lost my motivation."

"I'll start again when I feel motivated."

Here's the problem:

Motivation is a feeling.

And feelings are notoriously sh*tty employees.

Some mornings motivation shows up early with coffee.

Some mornings motivation calls in sick.

And sometimes motivation apparently changed its phone number and moved to fu***ng Nebraska.

That doesn't mean motivation doesn't matter.

It does.

Research on exercise behavior consistently shows that motivation—particularly when the reason for doing something actually matters to YOU—is associated with better persistence and adherence.

But long-term behavior can't depend entirely on waking up every morning and hoping you FEEL like doing it.

That's where discipline comes in.

And before anybody thinks I'm preaching from the Mountaintop of Motivation—

Nope.

Even the Iron Hippie struggles with this one.

My gym is literally right outside my door.

I don't have to drive anywhere.
I don't have to fight traffic.
I don't even have weather as an excuse.

But that gym is also where Jacob and I used to work out together.

Does walking in there sometimes jerk my chain?

Yep.

Are there days I absolutely do NOT want to go in there?

Yep.

Do I go anyway?

MOSTLY.

And I think that last word matters.

Not always.

MOSTLY.

Because discipline isn't perfection.

It's not never struggling.
It's not never missing a workout.
It's not forcing yourself through illness, injury, exhaustion, or something your body is legitimately telling you to pay attention to.

And it sure as hell isn't proof that somebody who struggles just "doesn't want it badly enough."

Sometimes "I don't feel like it" is procrastination.

Sometimes life is fu***ng hard.

And sometimes grief is standing on the other side of the door.

Discipline is learning the difference.

And then—when you're able—coming back.

That's actually where some pretty interesting behavioral science lives.

Behaviors repeated in a consistent context can gradually become more automatic. Routines, environmental cues, planning and repetition can reduce how much a behavior depends on a fresh burst of motivation every single time.

Translation:

You don't need to win an inspirational speech with yourself every morning.

Sometimes you just put your damn shoes on.

And when you DON'T?

You start again.

You miss Tuesday?

Fine.

Tuesday isn't the problem.

Turning Tuesday into three months is the problem.

Discipline isn't never falling off.

DISCIPLINE IS SHORTENING THE DISTANCE BETWEEN FALLING OFF AND GETTING BACK ON.

That is why MOSTLY matters.

Not perfect.

Not every damn day.

MOSTLY.

Because the behaviors we return to over and over eventually become part of how we live.

Motivation asks:

"Do I feel like it?"

Discipline says:

"That wasn't the question."

Question everything—including me.

Then read the study.

Texas Rodeo Hall of Fame

Texas Rodeo Hall of Fame

Rodeo trivia:

July 4, 1883. Trav Windham, Morg Livingston, and a group of area ranch hands gathered in Pecos to prove who could throw the best loop. No grandstand. No purse. Just cowboys who wanted an answer.

That day is recognized as the world's first rodeo. Today West of the Pecos stands as a PRCA Top 40 rodeo and a ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductee, and the question still gets answered the same way it did in 1883. In the dirt.. History like this is what makes rodeo the sport we love today.
