Bone Code Tutoring

Bone Code Tutoring Alex Bone tutors your child or teen on how to code! I recently got two dogs, a Goldendoodle named Pippa and a Sheepdoodle named Shepard. I love them to bits!

I took Judo for 2 months recently and when that didn't pan out, I got a staff to spin. It's very relaxing. I used to be 315 pounds but dropped to 235! Still on the grind. The furthest I've traveled from home is Sofia, Bulgaria. I also enjoyed visiting Italy and I've touched the four corners of the U.S.

There are 2 types of variables (data) in programming: primitive and derived types. Primitive types are the baked-in categories of data like numbers and true/false values. Derived types point to a space in memory where more complex values like Strings (phrases) or objects (i.e. "car," "student," etc.) are held.

A "function" or "method" is a task you can make a program do on command. They can be built from the ground up to do whatever you want! These are really useful when you will have to do the same action a lot of times with different input.
For example: You can make a function that picks all the even numbers up to and including the number you put in.
evenNum(7) ==> 2, 4, 6
evenNum(10) ==> 2, 4, 6, 8, 10
evenNum(0) ==> -1 (special result when you can't find any even numbers)

Apple's first consumer computer, the "Apple II," had its name inspired by the summer Steve Jobs spent working in an apple orchard. Such a natural origin for a man-made machine!

- Confidentiality (nobody can see what you are sending/receiving)
- Integrity (nobody can alter what you are sending/receiving)
- Availability (you can access the data or service itself)

World's fastest binary lesson:
Treat every 1 digit as 2 to the something power. The exponent power counts up from zero, right to left. Do the exponents for each digit then add them up. Like this:
0101 --> 0ยณ + 2ยฒ + 0ยน + 2โฐ --> 0 + 4 + 0 + 1 --> 5
0101 = 5
Now you can count in robot! ๐Ÿค–

Ever wondered what's up with the secure part of HTTPS in your URL bar? Sites use something called "Public Key Infrastructure" where we use asymmetric cryptography to:
1. Make sure no one can view what you are seeing (Confidentiality)
2. Make sure it's obvious if someone edits what you are seeing (Integrity)
3. Verify the identity of you and the site you are visiting (Authenticity)
Basically, it's like secret code languages we'd pass back in forth in elementary school, just using more complex math!

In programming, we call words or sentences "Strings" because that type of data is a sequence of characters strung together. That makes coding sound like a complex game of cat's cradle!

In coding, "memory" refers to how much information the computer is holding at once. Short term memory is called "Random Access Memory (RAM)" and accounts for what is currently running on your PC. Long term memory is what you save on your hard drive and open to RAM later, like your files.

Moore's Law is the concept that the number of transistors in an integrated circuit doubles every two years. In other words, our computers are getting exponentially smarter. They're on the verge of doing the same calculations per second as mice!

The Apollo 11 spacecraft only had 4 kilobytes of memory. Your phone probably has around 4 gigabytes... That's a million times stronger! I wonder how strong computers will be in just another decade?

Did you know if you took all the text from Wikipedia and put it on a USB stick it would only take about ~25 gigabytes of space? That's the largest collection of human knowledge in your pocket!

Did you know the internet was predicted very accurately in 1962? Marshall McLuhan said the sharing of data would lead to a "global village." Specifically, he described:
"A computer as a research and communication instrument could... retrieve the individual's encyclopedic function and flip it into a private line to speedily tailored data of a saleable kind."
