Technology slowdowns during tax season can quietly create operational friction inside accounting firms.

Small workflow delays, disconnected systems, and recurring manual workarounds often create a larger business impact than leadership initially realizes.

We recently developed a Technology Risk & Resilience Checklist for accounting firms to support post-season technology review conversations.

Tax season often exposes technology slowdowns inside accounting firms that create operational friction during busy periods.

Workflow delays, disconnected systems, approval bottlenecks, and recurring manual workarounds can quietly affect productivity and responsiveness when pressure is highest.

We recently developed a Technology Risk & Resilience Checklist to help accounting firms review these technology-related operational issues after tax season.

Tax season often exposes technology issues inside accounting firms that create operational friction during busy periods.

For many firms, the issue is not major system failure — it is recurring slowdowns, workflow delays, disconnected systems, and manual workarounds that affect productivity under pressure.

We recently developed a Technology Risk & Resilience Checklist to help accounting firms review these issues more strategically after tax season.

AI creates opportunity, but it also requires discipline.

The real issue is not whether businesses should use AI. Many should.

The more important question is whether leadership has defined where AI fits, how it should be used, what data should be protected, and where human judgment still needs to remain firmly in place.

Technology should support better decisions, stronger processes, and more efficient operations.

It should not quietly take control of work the business has not clearly structured.

I explore this theme further in Winning With Tech in the Age of AI.

Most CPA firms are adopting AI fast — but without the structure to support it.

That’s where the real risk begins.

AI doesn’t fix broken processes. It amplifies them.
And without clear boundaries, governance, and oversight… you’re exposing more than you’re improving.

The firms that succeed with AI don’t just adopt tools — they build readiness.

Most CPA firms are talking about AI… but few are truly ready for it.

Interest in AI is not Readiness.
AI will not fix broken processes — it amplifies them.

Streamline processes before automation .

The firms that win with AI aren’t the fastest adopters — they’re the most prepared.

As I have been working through the audiobook for 𝙒𝙞𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙒𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙏𝙚𝙘𝙝 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘼𝙜𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝘼𝙄, Chapter 1 has made me slow down and revisit ideas I have been carrying for a long time.

There is a difference between writing that technology should be viewed strategically and actually hearing yourself say it out loud.

It makes you think about all the real situations behind the sentence.

The aging systems that everyone learned to work around.

The recurring issues that never seemed urgent enough until they disrupted something important.

The business owner who thought they were saving money, while the business quietly absorbed more risk and inefficiency each year.

That is really what this chapter is about.

Not hardware.
Not software.
Not vendors.

It is about whether leadership understands the operational consequences of underestimating technology.

Working through the audiobook has reminded me that this is still a very current conversation. New tools may change. The AI discussion may dominate attention for a while. But the more basic leadership issue underneath it has not changed very much at all.

How a business views technology still shapes the quality of the decisions that follow.

One thing that has stood out while recording the audiobook for 𝙒𝙞𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙒𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙏𝙚𝙘𝙝 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘼𝙜𝙚 is how much more direct certain ideas feel when spoken out loud.

Chapter 1 has done that for me.

It brought me back to something I saw repeatedly over the years: businesses often thought they were being disciplined when they made the cheapest technology decision available.

Sometimes they were actually creating a much more expensive problem.

Not immediately.
But eventually.

The cost would show up in lost time, recurring workarounds, unreliable systems, staff frustration, and leadership distraction.

That is one reason I have always believed technology decisions need to be viewed in business terms, not just purchase terms.

Recording this chapter has reminded me that many operational problems do not begin as major failures. They begin as small compromises that get normalized over time.

That was true when I first developed these ideas, and it still feels true now.
