Week #3 - complex pattern for the mini collection challenge with ! After some researching on native plants of the Serengeti grasslands, Red oat grass (Themeda triandra) caught my eye. Illustrated separate grass stalk motifs to create this wild complex pattern to go with my cheetah! 🐆

Behind the scenes of my cheetah print pattern! Yes - I stared at a photo of a cheetah for inspiration (I swear I didn’t just make a square chocolate chip cookie 🍪 😆)

Sharing some of my process of doodling in Adobe Fresco, layering the subtle colors, and then sending my vector layers to Illustrator to keep working. A nice workflow to keep my hand-drawn elements and then fine tuning in Illustrator!

Once my pattern tile swatch was built, I may have went overboard trying color combos but I won’t share them all - just a peek of what my file started to look like and a few of the multi-color spots 💕

Cheetah print pattern colorways for my repeat blender pattern! 🐆 Made some spot patterns with subtle highlights and shadows, but as I was making new color pairings keeping them super simple/one-color spots seemed best. To change up from the standard Cheetah palette, I sprinkled in some purple ones just for fun 💜 Mini collection prompts with ✨ (Week 2: Blender Pattern)

Who was talking about multiple styles and just keep creating? 🫣😜 I couldn’t decide last week so I actually did both of my detailed vector styles!

This Illustrator style is a little more mentally taxing on me with visualizing which colors and shapes to layer and decisions galore. The outcome when it’s done is satisfying but the process looks… strange haha. Yet I still love it!

Using the same free reference image, I made different decisions for each one but had them end in the same color palette. And oddly enough doing the Fresco style first actually helped me make decisions quicker for the Illustrator one…hmmm 🤔

Swipe to see early stages of both styles and side-by-side comparisons! 🐆

I like big cats. Jungle cats 🐆🐅🌴I really just love animals a ton but I’m definitely drawn to big cats. I have tigers and cheetahs sprinkled around the house from jars, to pillows, to mugs (and I’m the sucker who bought this cold brew coffee because of the leopard logo lol)

When I see the big cat artwork of others, I’m so inspired and in awe. I think it’s the bees knees and why haven’t I created my own?

And honestly, I was worried - what if I don’t like my OWN art? What if I can’t make something nearly as brilliant and cool? I’ve had to stop these thoughts and reframe -

What if I just make something and see how it goes? I can always keep making cheetah art. Why stop at one? Keep practicing, keep trying different styles, keep creating until something feels right. And then the other thought reframe I’ve told myself recently is this -

✨Let the artwork unveil itself✨

I know there’s a ton of cheetah art out there and mine is not really an original concept of a cheetah sitting with its tail swishing upwards. But what is my version anyways? I can’t possibly know exactly how my art will turn out so why not try and see?

My advice:

✨Be curious about what you’re going to make✨💕

How cool will your version of this idea be? Let it take form and again - you can just keep creating, right? Imperfection is okay. Not liking it right away is okay too. How do writer’s work? With drafts that are edited and rewritten and tweaked over and over again. Why not give yourself space to create and refine and let your art surprise you 😊🤍

Pink penguin anyone? 💕 Sometimes it’s nice to just doodle and sketch for doodle sketch sake! Started with pink because a lighter color is nice to get the base layer but then I decided it didn’t need any other colors. What do you think?
