Replacing VMware on existing cluster servers does not always require a big-bang migration. SmartX’s approach is to use a temporary transition cluster as the bridge:
1️⃣ Build an SMTX OS temporary cluster on your legacy servers, then use the SMTX Migration Tool to move VMware VMs into the temporary SMTX OS cluster.
2️⃣ Install SMTX OS software on the original VMware cluster servers, serving as the production SMTX OS cluster.
3️⃣ Use SMTX OS cross-cluster hot migration to move the VMs from the temporary cluster to the production cluster without downtime.
This approach helps keep business VMs running continuously on the temporary cluster, while the SMTX Migration Tool uses multiple strategies to minimize downtime and protect business continuity. It also avoids the need to buy new hardware for both the temporary cluster and the production cluster, reducing infrastructure costs.
We’ve also seen a similar approach used by LESSO Group to replace its existing HCI platform and VMware virtualization with SmartX ECP active-active clusters. Learn more 👉 https://www.smartx.com/hk-mo/success-story/lesso-case-study
