Should I use ice or heat for my low back pain?

Heat: There is evidence to suggest that heat may help relieve low back pain. Apply moist heat (hot packs, bath, shower) for 15-20 minutes at a time.

Ice: There is evidence to suggest that ice may help relieve pain, swelling, and inflammation (especially during the early stages of an injury). Ice the area at least 2-3 times per day (especially in the first 24-72 hours after onset) for 15-20 minutes at a time.

You may also consider alternating between heat and ice. Use heat for 15-20 minutes, then use ice for 15-20 minutes.

*Ice or heat are most effective in providing relief in addition to gentle mobility and exercise, and time.
