Oof! When you get that bite 🤌🏼😍

I’ve been tweaking my press setup to get a deep impression into this gorgeous handmade paper. I’m happy so far but there is still some more tweaking to be had. This is all part of the ‘make ready’ process that is the set up for printing. It takes waaaaay longer than it does to actually print anything, but it’s worth the fuss for delicious impressions like this.

After mixing some festive green ink, I pulled this test print on my . They are so fun to use! I know I could spend more time evening out the coverage, but I actually like the grainy effect left on this gorgeous cotton paper. I think I prefer this version to the reversed out dove. Next step is to recarve on a lino block and lock it up on the press.

I picked up this bunch of cuties during a trip to my local antique store in Palmer a few months back. They had bowls of lead type literally spilling over. Apparently people had been buying them by the handful to melt down and make ammo with, such is the ammo shortage in Alaska I’m told. I’m a bit sad about the fate of those I couldn’t save, but glad I managed to sn**ch these little beauties. I spent a good couple of hours hunched over those bowls matching type faces, sizes and making little words. It was quite relaxing! Now to remember what words I made when I picked them out… 🤔

After nearly 20 years as a print designer, I’m finally making the natural progression into hand printed, letterpress stationery.

I’ve had a stationery obsession since primary school. I remember collecting and admiring different prints and textures on paper, keeping them in folders, making sure it was kept pristine - swapping envelopes and matching pages with other girls at recess - the scented paper was always the most revered 🥰. Who else remembers that?! I miss all the sets I had, they were prized possessions back then.

30 (something!) years later, enter Spruce & Wattle Press. A homage to both my homes - Spruce, for the trees that litter the valley in my adopted home of Alaska, and Wattle, for my Australian born and bred roots. Here I’ll share processes and designs and probably some more Alaskan themed fun for my Aussie mates 😉

If you are interested in working together on future projects, shoot me a message.
