Got a text from the boss asking you to grab gift cards? Call the boss first.

It shows up looking like it came from the owner or office manager. "Are you at your desk? I need a quick favor. Pick up four Apple gift cards for a client and send me the codes. I'm in a meeting, can't talk." The name looks right. The number or email address does not. Once those codes go out, that money is gone.

The fix costs nothing. Make it office policy that nobody buys gift cards, wires money, or changes payment info off a text or email alone. Confirm by calling the person at the number you already have, not the one in the message. Tell your front desk and any new hires this week, before the holiday rush picks up in Palm Desert and La Quinta.

Want help setting up those rules and the email filtering behind them? Here is how Palm Desert Geeks handles business security: https://pdgeeks.com/business-it.html

Friday tip before a weekend out in the Coachella Valley: look before you scan that QR code.

Scammers print their own QR stickers and slap them over real ones on parking signs, restaurant table tents, event flyers, and gas pumps. You scan, a payment page that looks normal pops up, and your card number goes to someone else. Before you tap anything, read the web address your camera shows. If it is a strange domain, a shortened link, or it asks for card info just to see a menu, close it. When in doubt, type the business website yourself or pay at the counter.

Thursday tip for Coachella Valley snowbirds and locals: skip the free Wi-Fi for anything that matters.

Hotel lobbies, coffee shops on El Paseo, and airport waiting areas love to offer open networks. That is fine for a weather check. It is not fine for your bank, email, or work login. If you need to pay a bill or check messages from Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, or La Quinta while you're out, use your phone's personal hotspot instead. Same goes for guest Wi-Fi at a vacation rental you just moved into for the season.

Wednesday tip for everyone heading back to the desert for the season: update before you log in.

If your laptop, tablet, or desktop sat in a closed-up house in Palm Desert, La Quinta, or Indian Wells all summer, it is months behind on security patches. Before you sign into your bank or email, plug it in, connect to Wi-Fi, and run every update until it says you're current. Then restart your router and change the Wi-Fi password if a house sitter or contractor used it while you were gone. Ten minutes now beats a hacked account in November.

Tuesday tip for Coachella Valley shoppers: that package text is usually a scam.

You get a text that says your Amazon, UPS, or FedEx delivery failed and you need to click a link to reschedule. It looks real, and it hits a lot of people in Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, and Indio who order online. Don't tap the link. Open the real app or type the tracking number on the carrier's website yourself. If the text asks for a card, a login, or a small fee to unlock the package, delete it.

Monday reminder: a pop-up that says your computer is infected and gives you a phone number is a scam.

We hear about these every week from folks in Palm Desert, Indian Wells, and Cathedral City. The screen flashes red, a voice says call Microsoft or Apple right now, and the person on the line asks for remote access or a gift card. Real companies don't do that. Don't call the number. Hold the power button until the computer shuts off, then turn it back on. If you already let someone in or paid, call your bank first, then call us.

Sunday check: when was the last time your phone photos were backed up?

We see it every week at the shop. A phone takes a swim in a Palm Desert pool or slides off a golf cart in La Quinta, and years of grandkid pictures go with it. Take two minutes today. Open Settings, look for iCloud Photos or Google Photos backup, and make sure it says it finished recently. If you're running out of space, a cheap plan beats losing everything.

Not sure it's working? Stop by Palm Desert Geeks or give us a call and we'll check it with you.

Saturday IT tip for Coachella Valley: back up with the 3-2-1 rule. Keep 3 copies of your data, on 2 different kinds of storage, with 1 copy offsite. One failed drive or ransomware hit should never cost you everything.

Saturday chore that takes five minutes: restart your router.

Most of us in the Coachella Valley leave the same router running for months, through every summer power blip and IID flicker. A restart clears memory, picks up firmware updates, and often fixes that slow Wi-Fi in the back bedroom. While you're at it, check the admin page and make sure the password isn't still the one printed on the sticker.

If your connection still drags after that, bring it by Palm Desert Geeks or give us a call and we'll take a look.
