School's out!

Kids are home, the office is half empty, and people are in and out all day.
Instead of sitting down and working straight through, you're handling things in between everything else.

An email comes in. It looks normal. You take care of it and move on.

No red flags. No second thought.

Well, this time of year, that's often how Security issues start.

When routines change and attention is split, it is a lot easier for the wrong thing to slip through. Attackers know this and they count on it.
I know no one wants to slow down when there's already too much going on, but slowing down for a few seconds on a suspicious email can save your Business a lot of money and headaches.

👉 We explain what to watch for in our latest blog post:

Business Email Compromise isn't just a big-company problem — and the financial hit is very real. We're seeing incidents cost businesses anywhere from $16,000 to over $150,000. And here's the part that catches most people off guard: your bank likely won't cover it.

Why? Because your employee — or you — authorized the transfer. The bank didn't get hacked. The money wasn't stolen from their vault. From their perspective, you sent it.

Unless you had specific dual-signature or transfer approval rules in place that weren't followed, you have very little legal ground to stand on. And even then, recovering the funds is a long shot — by the time anyone catches it, the money has usually been moved multiple times. This is exactly why prevention matters more than response.

If your inbox has 8,000 unread emails, we’re not judging.

But here’s a 5-minute fix:
✔ Use “Rules” in Outlook or Gmail
(Automatically sort newsletters into folders.)

✔ Use “Unsubscribe” (yes, it works).

✔ Block 2 daily email check times instead of reacting constantly.

You leave for the weekend, but your business doesn’t.

And neither do the people trying to break into it.

The risk doesn’t stop after hours, but it does grow.

If a vendor emails you asking to update their bank routing information, what's your process?
If the answer is "we just update it" — that's a problem.
Business Email Compromise attackers are counting on exactly that. They send a convincing email, you reply to confirm, and they say "yes, this is legit." Of course they do. You just replied to them.
Even calling a phone number from the email isn't safe — it could be redirected straight to the attacker.
Here's what actually works:

Require 2 people to approve any banking changes
Call the vendor using the number you already have on file — not what's in the email
Apply the same policy internally — an employee "changing their direct deposit" should have to physically come in and fill out a written form

These aren't complicated steps. But without a policy in place, one email can cost your business tens of thousands of dollars.

How many browser tabs do you have open right now?

If it’s more than 15, let’s change that.

Here’s a simple fix:

✔ Use Tab Groups (Chrome & Edge)
Right-click a tab → “Add tab to new group.”
You can label them: “Accounting,” “Marketing,” “HR,” etc.

✔ Use OneTab (Free Extension)
It collapses all open tabs into one clean list you can restore later.

✔ Bookmark folders for repeat workflows.
Your brain shouldn’t be your tab management system.

Imagine hiring an intern and giving them access to your emails, client data and internal documents …

And never checking their work.

That’s how most businesses are using AI right now.

It’s fast. Helpful. Impressive.

It can also:
Share data you didn’t mean to share
Use tools you didn’t approve
Create answers that sound right, but aren’t

You've got two-factor authentication set up. You think you're covered. But here's what most people don't realize — your 2FA code can still be stolen.

Here's how it happens: an employee gets a convincing phishing email. They click it, land on what looks exactly like a Microsoft login page, and type in their username, password, and their 2FA code. Everything looks normal. They successfully log in.

But the attacker just captured that token in real time — and now they can use it to access the account themselves, at least for a limited window. By then, the damage is done.

This is why employee training isn't optional. When people are busy and constantly interrupted, they miss things. Regular, reinforced training is what builds the instinct to pause before clicking.

2FA is still worth having. But it's one layer — not a complete solution.

Keepnet Lab’s 2025 New Hires Phishing Susceptibility Report finds new employees are 45% more likely to fall for CEO impersonation emails.

Not because they’re careless, but because they don’t know what’s normal yet.

Picture this:
An email comes in from the “CEO” asking for a quick payment.
It feels urgent and looks legit.
The employee is only on day four.
They don’t want to be the employee who ignored the CEO, so they help.

That’s all it takes.

👉 We break down why the first week is the most dangerous and how you can change that in our new blog post: https://buff.ly/wWvlQms
