Show the Clipboard

Have you ever wondered where your copied items are stored before you paste them? Did you know it's stored in the clipboard and you can go back and look at the history of what you’ve copied and pasted?

It’s pretty simple to get to, once you know the trick. Hold the Windows key and hit the “V”key (or ⊞+V) A window will pop up that looks like the picture in this post. (BTW, this window has a lot of other stuff you can look through and use!).

This window is the clipboard history and will show everything that is stored on the clipboard. You can insert any of these into documents or delete them. To delete an item, select the 3 dots on the one you want to delete and click the trash can. To insert one of the clipboard items, just select where you want to insert the item in your document and click on the item on the clipboard, it will paste it where your cursor is in the document.

Just know that the clipboard is cleared out when you restart your computer, but there's a way to keep the items on the clipboard as long as you want. If you notice, there is a push pin icon that will pin anything to the clipboard until you delete it.

Also note that the clipboard will only hold up to 25 items and items smaller than 4Mb.

Have fun searching and using your clipboard!

Searching the Start Menu

Did you know you can search the start menu in Windows 11 for just about anything? Just click on the start menu and start typing (or you can click on the search here field). It will find Applications, documents, stuff on the internet and more.

Once you type something in, you will see tabs at the top of the Window that says “All | Apps | Documents | Web | More▽”. Select All to see everything it's found in the list. Select Apps just to see what Apps are on your PC, Select Documents to see just the documents it found that match your search, and select More to search email, Photos, and more things.

Start using the start menu in Windows 11 to find the stuff you've been looking for!

Links in emails

Tech Tip Tuesday!

Have you ever gotten an email that has a link embedded to a website? Probably so, because many Phishing scams send embedded links. One type will send you a link saying; for example, that your package cant be delivered or is delayed. They want you to click the link and confirm your information. Don’t do it!

As a general rule, I NEVER click links in emails, even if they are from a trusted sender.

So how do I check that the information is bogus or legit? I usually right click the link in the email and “Copy Link Address”. You can then paste the address into Word or some other text editor and examine the link to see if it looks legitimate. You can also right click the link and click “inspect” it will open a window on the right that shows the code behind the email. The link is usually highlighted, but there's a lot of stuff there and it may be confusing.

So how can you tell if the link is legit? Well, if the email is coming from UPS and you examine the link and it's going to upssites.com, or ups-us.ca or some other weird site (usually they are foriegn an don’t look legitimate), you can be assured it's a scam.

You can also look at the email address of the sender to see if it looks legitimate. All mail programs are different, but most of them give you the ability to look behind the name and see the email address. Usually bogus emails will use; for example, “Amazon Customer Support” as the name, but when you look at the email it's coming from [email protected] or something not Amazon.com. This is a tell tale sign that you're dealing with a scammer.

Be safe out there and don’t click links in emails!

Open Task Manager

Need to open Task Manager to force close a task or look at your computer performance? You can easily find the Task Manager in Windows 11 several ways:

The easiest way is to just right click the Start Menu (it's the icon in the task bar at the bottom toward the left end) and look for Task Manager. You may notice there are a bunch of other things listed there you might find helpful! (You can also get to this menu by hitting the Windows Key+X or ⊞+X).

Another easy way is to hit the Ctrl+Alt+Del keys simultaneously, you will see an option to open the Task Manager there.

A 3rd way is to hit the Ctrl+Shift+Escape keys simultaneously and this will open the Task Manager.

And another quick way is to click the Start button or the Search button (looks like a magnifying glass next to the Start Button) and just start typing “task”, you should see “Task Manager App” as an option. Click on “Task Manager App” and it will open the task manager.

Once you’re in the Task manager, look around, there are a bunch of tabs and things that tell you a lot about your computer. If it doesn’t look like much, just a few apps that you have open, click “More Details” at the bottom and you will see lots of things to discover, and lots of things for me to cover in a future Tech Tip Tuesday!

Showing your desktop screen:

Do you ever need to quickly get to your desktop screen? With Windows 10 you could right click the taskbar and select “Show the Desktop''. That option was removed in Windows 11, but there are still a couple quick ways to show your desktop in Windows 11.

The quickest and easiest is to hit the Windows key (the key between the Ctrl and Alt keys on the bottom left of your keyboard) + the “D” key or ⊞+D.

If you don’t want to remember hotkeys, then you can use your mouse to go to the very bottom right of the screen. There’s an empty spot just to the right of the Date and Time. When you hover over the empty spot, you will see a gray vertical bar appear. If you click that gray bar, it will show the desktop.

That’s it, 2 simple, quick ways to show the Desktop in Windows 11.
