Southeastern Indiana REMC

Southeastern Indiana REMC Southeastern Indiana Rural Electric Membership Corporation (REMC), headquartered in Osgood, Indiana. Today, the REMC is owned by the members it serves.

Southeastern Indiana Rural Electric Membership Corporation (REMC) was formed in April 1939 by a handful of rural residents who wanted to have the electric conveniences their city neighbors had experienced for decades. A loan of $200,000 from the Rural Electrification Administration (REA) program was used to build 240 miles of distribution line in 1939. By the end of 1939, the REMC had 290 members

with electricity. A membership fee of $4.00 was charged to anyone wanting electricity in the rural area. Families would painstakingly set aside bread money to purchase a washing machine, an iron, or a reading lamp. Members who did not have the money for the fee would help crews dig holes for the electric poles or string wire, in exchange for the membership fee. The REMC coverage area spans all or parts of seven counties, including Dearborn, Franklin, Jefferson, Jennings, Ripley, Ohio, and Switzerland counties. It is ranked the second largest cooperative in the state of Indiana. The REMC has had five General Managers since 1939. Frank Ratts was General Manager from 1939 to 1962, Cranor Smith was General Manager from 1962 to 1971, Dean Veatch was General Manager from 1971 to 1991, Robert Mackey was General Manager from 1991 to 2014, and Bryan K. Mathews is the current General Manager. Some of our biggest challenges include:
Restoring electricity in a timely manner when the electricity goes off;
Constructing distribution electric lines in hard to reach places;
Drilling holes in areas where it’s mostly rock;
Funding line extensions and replacing aging lines;
Collecting money from people who don’t pay their electric bill;
Keeping up with technology changes, environmental issues, and government mandates. We feel our future depends on our ability to treat people with respect and take care of their needs in a timely manner. In addition, we believe our future is based on honesty, integrity, commitment to our community, being innovative and accountable.

UPDATE (Noon): The fiber outage remains ongoing at this time. SEI Fiber connects members through an upstream fiber provider, and that provider is currently experiencing an outage. This issue continues to affect multiple providers in the area, not just SEI Fiber.

Our team remains in direct communication with our upstream fiber provider as they work to restore service. We understand how frustrating it is to be without service, and we are continuing to ask for the same information our members are asking for, including when service will be restored.

At this time, we still do not have an estimated restoration time. We will share confirmed updates as soon as more information becomes available.

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding.

Scam Tip of the Month

If you receive a call from someone stating you have overpaid your energy bill and you should provide your banking information or a credit card number to receive a refund, hang up because it’s likely a scam. If you overpay your bill, your utility will apply the overpayment credit to your account balance or mail a check. They will not call and request your banking information to issue the refund.

Welcome to Energy Explorers, a fun monthly feature just for kids!

Each month, we’ll share a fun activity to help young learners explore electricity, energy, safety, and the cooperative world around them in a simple, kid-friendly way.

This month’s activity is a Solar Energy Pop Quiz. Kids can test their knowledge, learn a few new energy terms, and have a little fun along the way.

Parents, grandparents, teachers, and caregivers: feel free to print it, share it, or work through it together with your young Energy Explorer!

Co-op in Action: A Month of Community Connection

At Southeastern Indiana REMC, being a cooperative means showing up for the communities we serve, and this past month was full of opportunities to do just that.

Our team was proud to take part in the Ripley County Giving Circle Celebration, connect with local leaders at Ripley County Chamber events, celebrate the South Ripley Reds baseball field dedication, and support students through Reality Check events at Milan, Jac-Cen-Del, and South Ripley Middle Schools.

We also welcomed families to our onsite Kids Club event, celebrated scholarship recipients at East Central High School and Christian Academy of Madison, supported employees participating in leadership training, and joined leaders and board members at the Statehouse to advocate for our members and communities.

From classrooms and ballfields to community celebrations, student milestones, leadership development, and statewide conversations, we are grateful for every opportunity to connect, serve, and invest in the places we call home.

That’s your co-op in action.
