Labor Day started as a day to recognize the people who actually build things.

That still describes most of the businesses we work with. Contractors. Restaurant owners. Firms that got started with one person and a lot of long weeks.

If you are one of them, take the weekend if you can.

Happy Labor Day from all of us at Finepoint.

New month. Three things worth twenty minutes.

1. Update your hours on Google if anything changed heading into fall.

2. Ask three recent customers for a review. Not a mass email. Three people you actually served well.

3. Pull up your own website on your phone and try to find your phone number in under five seconds.

That is it. Twenty minutes and you are ahead of most of your competition this month.

If you only have budget for one (organic or paid) which wins? Here's our honest take.

This is one of the most common questions we get from small business owners who are just starting to think about marketing seriously. The answer is not as simple as picking a winner, but there is a practical framework that makes the decision pretty clear.

First, understand what each one actually does:

Organic marketing is anything that builds your visibility over time without paying per click. This includes your website SEO, your Google Business Profile, content you publish, and the reviews you collect. It takes longer to show results but the traffic it generates does not stop the moment you stop paying for it.

Paid marketing is anything where you pay for placement. Google Ads, Facebook Ads, Instagram Ads. You can turn it on today and get in front of people today. But the moment you stop spending, the leads stop coming.

So which one should you invest in first?

It depends on two things: how fast you need results and how stable your foundation is.

If you are a brand new business with no online presence, no reviews, and a website that nobody has ever found organically, paid ads can get you in front of customers while your organic presence is being built. Think of it as a bridge. You use paid traffic to keep the phone ringing while the slower, more durable work happens in the background.

If you have been in business for a few years and you already have some organic traction, reviews, and a reasonable website, investing in SEO first often delivers a better long-term return. You are building an asset that compounds over time rather than renting visibility month to month.

Think reviews are just for trust? They're also a ranking factor. Here's the proof.

Here's the expanded breakdown for that post:

Most business owners treat Google reviews as a trust signal, something that helps a potential customer feel confident enough to call. And they're right. But reviews are doing a second job at the same time that most people never think about.

Google uses reviews as a ranking signal. Here's how:

1. Review quantity
The number of reviews you have tells Google that real people are engaging with your business. A plumber with 4 reviews and a plumber with 140 reviews are not equal in Google's eyes, even if the star ratings are similar. Volume is a signal of legitimacy and activity.

2. Review recency
A business with 80 reviews, but the last one was 14 months ago, looks stagnant to Google. Fresh reviews signal that your business is active and still serving customers. Google favors businesses that are consistently generating new feedback over ones that collected reviews once and stopped.

3. Review keywords
When a customer writes "Keith fixed our furnace fast and the price was fair", the words furnace, price, and fast are now on your Google Business Profile, written by a third party. Google reads review content. If customers organically mention your services and your city in their reviews, those keywords reinforce what you do and where you do it.

4. Your response rate
Google has confirmed that responding to reviews is a best practice that impacts local ranking. When you respond, especially consistently, it signals that the business is active and engaged. Ignoring reviews does the opposite.

5. Star rating and click-through rate
A higher star rating gets more clicks in the map pack. More clicks tell Google your listing is relevant and trustworthy, which feeds back into your ranking position. It's a compounding effect β€” better reviews lead to more clicks, more clicks signal relevance, relevance drives higher rankings.
