Rapport is not friendliness.

It is how trust forms in a conversation.

In social engineering, rapport is often misunderstood as simply being likable. But rapport is more about creating enough comfort for a conversation to continue.

That can happen through tone, timing, shared context, active listening, or the feeling that the other person understands the situation.

For defenders, understanding rapport matters because trust does not always feel suspicious while it is being built. Sometimes it feels helpful. Sometimes it feels efficient. Sometimes it feels like a normal conversation.

One thing students learn in FASE is how communication, trust, influence, and observation shape human behavior and security decisions.

When security professionals understand rapport, they are better equipped to recognize when it is being used ethically and when it is being exploited.

The strongest verification habit is slowing down the moment.

Most people know they should verify unusual requests.

The harder part is doing it when the request feels urgent, familiar, or comes from someone who sounds confident.

That challenge is growing as AI makes impersonation, synthetic identity, and believable communication easier to produce.

Verification can no longer rely only on whether someone sounds right, looks right, or writes in a familiar way.

Strong verification starts with a pause.

Not suspicion. Not confrontation. Just enough space to ask:

Does this request match the process?
Is this the right channel?
Should I confirm this another way?
Does the risk level require escalation?

A good verification habit protects both the person and the organization.

Influence is not about control.

It is about understanding what shapes a decision.

In social engineering, influence is often misunderstood. It is not about forcing someone to do something. It is about understanding the factors that make a person feel comfortable, rushed, uncertain, helpful, or confident in the moment.

That matters in security because many attacks are built around normal human decision-making.

A request may feel reasonable because it comes from a familiar role.
It may feel urgent because the situation appears time-sensitive.
It may feel safe because the next step seems routine.
It may feel helpful because the person believes they are solving a problem.

One thing students learn in FASE is how trust, communication, influence, and observation shape human behavior and security decisions.

When security professionals understand influence, they are better equipped to recognize when it is being used ethically and when it is being exploited.

Vishing does not start with the phone call.

It starts with context.

The call may be the moment when an employee hears the request, but the trust-building often begins before that.

Public information can reveal roles, vendors, processes, announcements, and language patterns. AI can make that information easier to collect, summarize, and turn into believable communication.

That means a voice-based request may not feel random. It may sound familiar. It may reference a real workflow. It may use language the organization already uses. It may arrive with just enough urgency to make pausing feel inconvenient.

For defenders, the goal is not to make people suspicious of every call.

The goal is to help people recognize when context is being used to make a request feel more trustworthy than it should.

Every security decision begins with a human.

Elicitation is not interrogation.

It is the skill of guiding a conversation without making it feel forced.

In social engineering, elicitation is often misunderstood as asking direct questions until someone gives up information. But effective elicitation is much more subtle than that.

It relies on curiosity, context, rapport, and timing.

A well-guided conversation can reveal what someone knows, what they assume, what process they follow, or what they believe is normal.

That matters in security because attackers rarely need every detail at once. Sometimes they only need one small piece of information to make the next interaction more believable.

One thing students learn in FASE is how communication, trust, influence, and elicitation shape human interaction and security decisions.

When security professionals understand elicitation, they are better equipped to recognize when a conversation is being guided with intent.

The strongest social engineers are not always the best talkers.

They are often the best listeners.

Listening reveals what a script cannot.

It reveals hesitation.
It reveals assumptions.
It reveals what someone values.
It reveals what they are trying to solve.
It reveals where trust already exists.

In social engineering, talking too much can close doors.

Listening opens them.

For defenders, this matters too.

When teams understand how listening can be used to gather context, build rapport, and guide a conversation, they become better at recognizing when a normal interaction is becoming something more intentional.

Strong communication does not start with the perfect words.

It starts with observation.

Every security decision begins with a human.

A phishing email is not just a message.

It is a decision path.

Every part of the message is designed to move the recipient closer to action.

The sender builds familiarity.
The subject line creates relevance.
The opening line establishes context.
The body creates urgency or importance.
The call to action gives the recipient a next step.

That is why effective phishing defense requires more than teaching people to spot bad grammar or suspicious links.

Security professionals need to understand how attention is guided, how trust is borrowed, and how normal workflows can be used to make a request feel legitimate.

This is one of the applied areas students practice in PASE: moving from concept to realistic, ethical phishing scenario development.

Virtual PASE begins in November.

Awareness tells people what to look for.

Practice teaches them what it feels like.

That difference matters in social engineering defense.

It is one thing to recognize a suspicious email in a training module. It is another thing to recognize a suspicious request while you are busy, distracted, under pressure, or already engaged in a conversation.

Real attacks do not always feel obvious.

They can feel helpful.
They can feel familiar.
They can feel urgent.
They can feel like part of a normal workflow.

That is why effective training has to prepare people for the conditions where decisions actually happen.

Not just after the fact.
Not just in theory.
Not just when the warning signs are neatly labeled.

The goal is not to make people paranoid.

The goal is to help them recognize when trust, pressure, and authority are being used to guide their behavior.

Every security decision begins with a human.

Vishing training should help people recognize pressure in real time.

Voice-based social engineering is difficult because it happens live.

There is no inbox to revisit. No suspicious link to hover over. No time to step back and compare every detail.

The person has to listen, process, verify, and respond while the conversation is still moving.

That is why vishing education has to go beyond telling people what to watch for. People need to understand what pressure feels like in the moment and how to pause without shutting down the interaction.

IVES, Instant Vishing Education Service, is designed to help teams build that skill through realistic, educational voice-based training.

The goal is not fear. The goal is practice.

Trust is not the vulnerability.

Misplaced trust is.

Security conversations often treat trust like the problem. But trust is necessary for every organization to function.

People have to trust coworkers.
They have to trust vendors.
They have to trust processes.
They have to trust communication channels.
They have to trust that normal requests are actually normal.

Attackers know this.

They do not always need to break trust. Sometimes they simply borrow it.

They use familiar language.
They reference real roles.
They mirror normal workflows.
They create urgency around believable requests.

The issue is not that people trust. The issue is when trust is created too quickly, transferred too easily, or never verified when the request carries risk.

Stronger security does not ask people to stop trusting.

It teaches them how to recognize when trust is being engineered.

Every security decision begins with a human.
