Volunteer searchers in northern Mexico have unearthed 17 bodies and skeletal remains that were buried in backyards and under patios of houses in a low-income housing development. On Sunday, prosecutors in the northern border state of Sonora said the bodies had been stacked in four clandestine burial pits. The search continued on Monday. According to the state prosecutor's office, additional finds were made at abandoned houses in the city of Ciudad Obregon. The victims are believed to have been killed between six months and a year ago. The subjects will undergo specialized forensics tests to confirm their identities.

A fire in a palm tree forest in Baja California Sur, Mexico has damaged or destroyed at least 40 homes. The fire occurred in the small town of Santiago, about 55 kilometers north of San José del Cabo, and burned at least 50 hectares of forest. The area's characteristic high winds fanned the flames, making it difficult for firefighters to extinguish the blaze. Citizens in the area were evacuated from their homes. There were 10 cases of smoke inhalation but documented, but no deaths or serious injuries.

Residents of Puerto Madero are furious after more than 6,300 barrels of crude oil leaked into a protected area of the Ecuadorian Amazon. Locals say the oil has made its way into the sand and water in areas where children typically play and it may take up to 20 years for it to return to normal. Bolivia Buenano, a resident of the area, said, "[No one can] bathe normally in the river, nor drink from here, there is no fish, there is nothing." Buenano has joined a clean up crew assembled by oil transport company OCP, the owner of the pipeline that caused the oil spill. According to OCP, more than 84 percent of the crude has been recovered, but not before damage was done. The oil polluted 21,000 square meters (226,000 square feet) of the Cayambe Coca nature reserve and flowed into the Coca River, an important water source for many riverbank communities.

At least 11 people are dead and four others are missing after an explosion at a coal mine in the Tasco municipality of Colombia’s Boyaca province. The accident occurred on Saturday night and was caused by a buildup of methane in the mine. Officials fear that those who are missing died in the explosion. Accidents in the mining sector occur relatively regularly as some operations are illegal, or do not properly enforce safety standards. However, the mine in question did have approval from Tasco to operate. Colombia experienced 128 mining accidents in 2021, which killed 148 people. So far this year, 19 mining accidents have happened, killing 36 people.

Mexican officials are investigating reports that roughly 17 people were killed in the state of Michoacan. The investigation was launched after a video appeared on the internet showing gunmen storming a funeral wake and dragging mourners outside to be killed. President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has asked for patience as the chief prosecutor’s office investigates the event. The video, which appears to have been shot through a neighboring window with a high vantage point, shows the victims lined up against a wall with rifles pointed at them before gunfire prompts the person filming to hide. When the video returns to show the same spot on the street, only smoke and dust are visible. The incident occurred in an area where the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), the New Michoacan Family and Los Caballeros Templarios have been fighting ongoing turf wars.

According to municipal officials, more than 10,000 residents of Jerez, Zacatecas, Mexico have been forced to flee their homes due to ongoing gang violence in the area. The recent violence has been a result of a turf war between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Sinaloa Cartel, Mexico's two most powerful cartels. Jerez government secretary Marco Antonio Vargas stated that people have been displaced from 18 different communities within the municipality. Most of the displaced people are temporarily living with friends or family nearby while others have decided to travel north to seek asylum in the United States. The army has sent at least 10 armored all-terrain vehicles into the state, an indication that authorities intend to intensify their fight against organized crime.

According to Rio de Janeiro's state civil defense, the death toll from last week's mudslides and floods in Petropolis, Brazil reached 176 as of Monday. More than 110 people are still missing. Downpours in the city exceeded the average for the entire month of February last Tuesday alone, causing mudslides that flooded streets, destroyed houses, washed away cars and buses, and left gashes hundreds of yards wide on the region's mountainsides. Several other Brazilian states have sent additional personnel to help search for victims that are still missing and clean up debris.

At least 94 people have been killed by flooding and mudslides in Brazil's mountain town of Petropolis. Torrential downpours caused landslides that buried homes, flooded the streets and washed away cars and buses. According to authorities, more than 80 homes were struck by mudslides and the death toll is expected to rise. Petropolis' city hall has declared three days of mourning and people who have been displaced have been moved to schools and shelters. More than 300 people have been forced to leave their homes. Since December, heavy rains have triggered flooding and mudslides several times causing deaths, delayed harvests and a short delay in mining operations in Minas Gerais.

Gummen in Mexico have killed nine people mourning the death of a man who died in jail last week. The killings took place during two separate attacks in the northern city of Ciudad Juárez. The assailants first burst into a private home where mourners had gathered for a wake for the deceased man and killed two women and a man. Several hours later, gunmen attacked the location of the funeral service, killing six more people. Investigators believe that the two attacks were carried out by the same criminal organization. Ciudad Juárez has one of the highest murder rates in the country, with most of those murders being linked to rivalries between local drug gangs.
