On June 28, 2026, a juvenile southern right whale swam into the Peel-Harvey Estuary near Mandurah, Western Australia, and could not find its way back out.

Locals nicknamed the whale Gale. At roughly 35 feet long, it was far too big for the shallow estuary, and for nearly three weeks it swam back and forth, unable to locate the narrow channel leading to the ocean.

Officers from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions monitored the whale the entire time, along with local volunteers. They said it was unusual for a whale to be in the estuary at all, but they remained confident it would eventually find its way out.

The whale had other help waiting. The estuary is home to a resident community of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins that lives there year-round.

On July 16, a pod of those dolphins swam alongside Gale and accompanied the whale toward the Dawesville Cut, the channel connecting the estuary to the sea. Footage captured that day showed the dolphins appearing to guide the whale the whole way out.

Gale passed through the cut, reached open water, and continued migrating along the Western Australian coast. The department added a reassuring note, if Gale ever wanders back in, the whale has now proven it can pass safely between the estuary and the ocean.

Total time trapped, 19 days. Time for the dolphins to es**rt it out, one afternoon.
