Our hearts go out to the family.

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Michelle Carter, a beloved member of our agency. She began her career with the SCSO in November 1999, but her role evolved over the years and ultimately to Special Operations Coordinator.

Michelle took on a collateral leadership role, overseeing SCSO Cook Team.
She built a team of dedicated professionals, and in 2024, under her leadership, the unit provided over 11,000 meals during hurricanes, charitable events, and agency gatherings. In addition to her operational duties, Michelle personally coordinated the popular "Day at Special Operations" events for community members, where her blend of professionalism, kindness, and humor made everyone feel welcomed and valued. For all this work and more, she was named the 2021 Special Operations Division Employee of the Year.

Her commitment to service was evident in everything she did. For more than two decades, she was the heart and soul of our Special Operations Division. Please keep Michelle’s family, our present and past members from the Special Operations Division who worked the closest with her, her friends, and loved ones in your thoughts during this difficult time.

It is with profound sadness that we share the loss of two of our own: Corporal Luis Paez & Deputy Sheriff Ralph “Butch” Waller. Both were tragically struck and killed by a driver on Southern Blvd while conducting traffic enforcement. Deputy Ignacio “Dan” Diaz was also critically injured in the crash and is currently fighting for his life. Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of our brothers, honor their memory, and support their families during this devastating time. Please keep Deputy Diaz in your prayers as he continues to fight.

To serve and protect was their oath; to honor them is our duty.
