AVOID THE "CALL THIS NUMBER" TECH SCAM
Lately, many of our clients have been targeted by "Tech Support Scams." These are those scary, loud pop-ups that claim your computer is locked and demand you call a number for help.
The most important thing to know: IT IS A LIE!
These are just malicious websites designed to scare you into calling a phone number...they NEED you on the phone. From there, the scammers act as someone from a reputable company and then trick you into allowing them remote access to your computer. If allowed into your computer...all bets are off. Because we want you to stay safe, I’ve put together a simple 5-step guide on what to do if this happens to you.
What to do if your computer says it is "Infected"
If your screen turns red, starts beeping, or tells you to call "Microsoft" or "Apple" immediately—DO NOT CALL. This is a scam designed to steal your money by first getting you on the phone.
Step 1: Stay Calm
Your computer is likely not actually "infected" yet. You have simply landed on a "scareware" webpage that is trying to trick you.
Step 2: Force the Window to Close
On a PC: Hold the "Alt" key and tap the "F4" key. Your browser should then close. If your browser didn't close, use the Ctrl + Alt + Del method (While pressing CTRL + ALT simultaneously and then tapping the "DEL" key, it will bring up your "lock screen" where you can select Task Manager. Once Task Manager opens, right-click the listed browser (e.g., Chrome, Edge, Firefox) and left click "End Task". This will also force your browser closed.
On a Mac: Hold Command + Option and press Esc, then select your browser and click Force Quit.
(The "Nuclear" Option: If the keyboard fails, hold down the physical Power Button on your computer for 10+ seconds until it turns off completely.)
Step 3: Restart Safely
Restart your computer as you normally would. When your computer turns back on, open your internet browser: DO NOT CLICK "Restore Pages." If the browser asks if you want to go back to where you were, click No or Cancel.
Step 4: The Peace of Mind Check
If you are worried, run a scan with your antivirus software...preferably Malwarebytes. If the scan comes back clean, you are safe!
Step 5: Call Someone You Trust
