Under $5 gets you WiFi, Bluetooth and two processor cores on a single module.

That's the ESP32, and it's the reason a lot of first hardware projects are possible at all. The 2.4GHz antenna on top handles the wireless. Wire it to an OLED and a couple of buttons and you have something pulling live data off the web.

The detail worth knowing: the module has a built-in programmer, so it connects straight to a USB-C port with nothing in between. That removes a whole category of setup that used to stop people at step one.

Breadboard is the easy half. Turning it into a board means footprints, placement, and giving that antenna the clearance it needs, which is where a lot of ESP32 projects quietly stop.

A finished PCB is not a finished product, and the gap between the two is where hardware timelines actually go.

Ryan runs assembly in our lab. His argument is that a bare board is one stage among several β€” you assemble it, you test it, and you find the things the schematic could not have told you. Then you go back and change the design.

It's the least glamorous part of building hardware, and the part that decides whether you ship.

Matthias and Lance started Flux in 2019 on a fairly plain premise: building electronics is harder than it needs to be.

The bet now looks like this, a PCB editor that runs in a browser tab, with an agent that plans the design, generates the schematic, places and routes it, and checks its own work along the way.

The mission line hasn't changed since day one. Take the hard out of hardware.

Most people who want to build hardware never get past the fear of a dead board.

Three decisions really determine whether a board works: which parts you choose, where they sit, and how they're connected. On this build that meant an STM32H7, a handful of buttons and audio jacks, and the usual passives.

Placement is where self-taught builders lose the most time. Decoupling capacitors have to sit next to the IC they support. Ground needs a clean return path. Get it wrong and you find out from the fab, not from the schematic.
