From our colleagues at the County of Marin: The Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) of the Federal Government has evolving intelligence indicating that the Russian Government is exploring options for potential cyberattacks. The Russian government has been known to engage in malicious cyber activities to enable broad-scope cyber espionage, suppress certain social and political activity, steal intellectual property, and harm regional and international adversaries. https://www.cisa.gov/shields-up

Due to these anticipated threats, CISA has launched a Shields Up campaign urging all organizations and individuals to take steps to protect themselves.

More great feedback about the Canal Wi-Fi project we’ve been working on in collaboration with the City of San Rafael, County of Marin, Canal Alliance, and Cisco Systems. San Rafael Director of Digital Services and Open Government Rebecca Woodbury, had the following to say about it:

“I’ve been reflecting a lot on it,” Rebecca said of the project. “It feels like we’re living in a world where everything is not working, and this project has worked. I think it was the right people. This project is really a testament to cross-agency, cross-sector cooperation. If everything in government worked like this, we would have fewer problems.”

Powerful, and inspiring words. Marin IT is proud to be part of the local team making this possible.

Marin County and the city of San Rafael, California are demonstrating what happens when local government, a community non-profit, and generous stakeholders come together to do something right. Over the summer they’ve built a Wi-Fi mesh network in the city’s Canal neighborhood to connect over 2,0...

We know it can be a challenge to keep all your systems up to date, but doing so has never been more critical. If you're still running Windows 7, Windows 2008 Server or have equipment that has gone end-of-life, you need to upgrade *before* you experience a breach or cyber attack. Recovering from a cyber attack is painful, but upgrading doesn't need to be. We're here to help.

The FBI says companies running Windows 7 systems are now in greater risk of getting hacked due to a lack of security updates.

Great article in the Marin IJ featuring the collaborative effort between Marin IT, the City of San Rafael, the San Rafael Canal Alliance, the San Rafael School District, DC Electric and the County of Marin to create a new, free community Wi-Fi network, expanding internet availability to the Canal district community in advance of the 2020/21 school year.

“We designed the network with students in mind, recognizing that as long as we’re all dealing with COVID-19, students will need to rely upon distance learning via Zoom classes, and if we want to keep our communities safe, we need to help make a robust system for increasing network availability. Marin County is our home, and if we can help our fellow residents stay safe, we’re happy to do our part. We really are all in this together.” says David Cooper, Marin IT co-founder and chief engineer.

Project managers aim to have the free service running in time for some 2,000 school children to use for their online studies this month.
