I promised to bring information to you today about Reality Fracture, so here it is. Please read, as this is super important for ANYONE who is excited for Reality Fracture's Prerelease this weekend.
Allocation numbers came in to us for this set for each of the product lines from distribution...and they were worse than The Hobbit (which was already the worst set of numbers we had seen for any standard set). It was the first time we were unable to sell full collectors booster boxes in recent history. Yet somehow, the numbers we were seeing for Reality Fracture were lower than the numbers from The Hobbit!
This was followed by the first email directly from Wizards of the Coast a couple of weeks back. They said, in a condensed version, "Play booster boxes will be limited availability at Prerelease due to a lack of water in the Panama Canal". No, I'm not making that up. So numbers from distribution dropped to about half of what we normally see on Play Booster boxes. While annoying, we figured we could make it work.
The next email was about a week and a half later. It stated, in short, that Bundles had been delayed and would not be available anywhere until after Prerelease. This has unfortunately become the norm for most recent sets.
Then this past Friday we got this email from our main distributor (the one that sends us the lion's share of product, as well as our prerelease kits):
"We are doing everything in our power to gather and ship what we have with your events being the upmost of importance.
As of TODAY Friday 9/18, we are still waiting for the following items to deliver:
MTG: Reality Fracture Prerelease Pack
MTG: Reality Fracture Collector's Booster Display (12 Packs)
MTG: Reality Fracture Commander Deck Display (4 Decks)
We understand the concern with these products (in particular prerelease kits that were stated to be on track) I will be updating first thing again on Monday (9/21) as we work through this tremendous challenge together."
There was no follow-up email this morning. I can only assume that's more bad news.
How does one run a prerelease without Prerelease kits, bundles, collectors boosters, commander decks, and limited play boosters? I guess we are going to find out this Friday.
Under a worst-case scenario, we will crack the limited booster boxes we receive this week and use them as stand-in prerelease kits. If that happens, we will literally have zero product to sell this weekend.
I know that we are just a single small local game store, and our opinions mean nothing in the grand scheme of things, but Wizards of the Coast can't keep doing business like this. It hurts everyone. If we could do anything about it, we would.
I saw someone post their opinion that I feel sums this whole situation up pretty well. They said, "I thought Reality Fracture was the name of the new set, not the new business model for Wizards of the Coast."
So please bear with us as we try to navigate this fiasco. When we say we can't set anything aside for anyone at release, we mean it. We will continue to update you as soon as we hear more.
Thank you from all of the staff at Serenity Hobbies Norwich.
