Clothes dryers use heat and speed to dry clothes, with the heating element being fueled by electricity, natural gas or propane. Essential to efficient clothes drying is the cycle of air flow. The amount of time it takes to dry clothes is largely due to the flow of air through the machine. Fresh air is drawn into the machine, heated, and then distributed throughout the drum by a blower or fan. The heated air draws the moisture from the clothes as the paddles lift and tumble the wet clothes until they reach the top of the drum. Gravity takes them back down through the dry, hot air. The process continues until the clothes are completely dry.

A front-loading washing machine inner basket and tub are mounted horizontally instead of vertically. Clothes are agitated by the back-and-forth rotation of the cylinder and gravity. The motion of lifting the clothes up by the paddles inside the drum wall and then dropping them, forces water, and detergent, through the flexed weave of the fabric. Front-load washers use only enough water to moisten the clothes and less detergent than a top-loading washer. The dropping, folding and tumbling action of the washer, however, produces more suds. The flexible door bellows keeps clothing contained inside the basket during tumbling. This prevents socks and small objects from slipping into the narrow slot between the outer tub basket and the door, plugging the drain, or jamming rotation of the inner basket. These folded door bellows can collect lint, dirt and moisture requiring them to be wiped down and cleaned monthly to avoid mold, mildew growth and foul odors.

A gas stove uses one of two methods for lighting, a standing pilot or an electronic ignition. A standing pilot light has a continuous burning flame usually between the front and back burners, continuously consuming fuel even when the stove is off. The flame lights the gas flowing out of the burners when the stove is turned on and is completely independent of an outside power source. Electric ignitions use an electric spark to ignite the burners.
