Just completed a 3-day Logic Concepts, Industrial Control & PLCs class at the Motion facility in Eden Prairie, MN. This course provides a basic, yet thorough understanding of logic as a concept, sequence of operation, and logic conversion from hard wired to PLC. Students are given a simple hard wired diagram, asked to convert it to a PLC program and explain the sequence of operation. PLC functions and programming procedures are also reviewed. We use LearnLab trainers with Allen Bradley Micro 820 PLCs and Connected Components Workbench programming software. This class is offered throughout the USA at several Motion facilities. I just finished a three-day Logix class at the Falcon Dam and reservoir. The Falcon Dam supplies water to two different hydroelectric power plants, one on the Mexican side and another on the U.S. side. Each power plant contains 3 x 10.5 MW Francis turbine generators for a combined total of 63 MW. Each turbine is controlled by Allen Bradley CompactLogix Controllers. The training was for the maintenance technicians that work on keeping the equipment up and running. What a cool experience to see the inner workings of the turbines that operate in the dam. The dam is under the supervision of the IBCW, International Boundary and Water Commission of the United States & Mexico

Falcon Dam is an earthen embankment dam on the Rio Grande between Starr County in the U.S. state of Texas and the city of Nueva Ciudad Guerrero in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. The dam was built for water conservation, irrigation, hydroelectric power generation, flood control, and recreational purposes and as an international border crossing between Zapata and Starr Counties and Tamaulipas. Construction on the dam began in December 1950 and ended in April 1954 but it was dedicated by presidents Adolfo Ruiz Cortines and Dwight D. Eisenhower in October 1953.
