WAY BACK WEDNESDAY:

On this day 72 years ago, Dr. Jonas Salk announced on national radio that he had successfully created a vaccine against Poliomyelitis. Polio is a disease that targets the nervous system causing paralysis. In 1921, President Franklin D. Roosevelt contracted the disease (age 39), which confined him to a wheelchair. By the 1950’s, Polio had become an epidemic and finding a vaccine was paramount.

Before he took office and faced the challenges of the Great Depression and World War II, FDR faced the challenge of Polio. This disease was sometimes deadly and always feared in the US during the first half of the twentieth century. Part of FDR's legacy is the Polio vaccine, released in 1955.

On this day in 1917, the US Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the Adamson Act of 1916. Railroad employers didn’t want to comply with this act which set a minimum wage, an eight-hour work day, and overtime pay for their workers. WAY BACK WEDNESDAY:

On March 12, 1957, Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel) published his fifteenth children’s book, "The Cat in the Hat." Challenged by William Spaulding from Houghton Mifflin, Dr. Seuss set out to write a book that contained around 200 words that a first grader could read.
