If you metal detect, DON'T read this.

For far too long, historic aerial imagery has effectively been locked behind expensive paywalls, clunky interfaces, and ad-filled experiences that make serious research harder than it should be.

Building a truly usable nationwide archive requires an enormous amount of work: finding the imagery, processing it, georeferencing it, aligning it, validating it, and turning millions of individual pieces into something people can actually explore.

What others spent more than a decade building and, by our estimate, well over $1.5 million assembling the Subterrix team has been attacking for just six weeks.

And this map is where we are right now.

Our technology has been processing, aligning, and georeferencing historic aerials 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We expected this to be a marathon. Instead, we are already ahead of schedule.

14,000+ images
1,200 sources
99% georeference confidence

But the bigger story isn’t how fast we’re building it. It’s what happens when we release it.

We plan to bring historic aerial imagery to every registered Subterrix user completely FREE. Not buried behind another subscription. Not surrounded by advertisements. Not trapped inside a research experience designed 15 years ago. We will not hold this hostage. This will be one of many gifts to the metal detecting community.

We’re building an immersive, full-screen desktop experience designed for actual exploration, where you can move through time, compare the landscape, study what disappeared, identify what changed, and connect the past to the ground beneath your feet.

Old farms. Forgotten roads. Vanished structures. Former home sites. Fields that became subdivisions. Communities erased by development. Places that exist today only because an aerial photograph captured them decades ago.

And this is only the coverage we’ve processed so far.

Every orange box on this map represents another piece of history being brought back to life.

We said we were going to build the most powerful historical research platform this hobby has ever seen.

We weren’t kidding.

Historic aerials are coming to Subterrix. Free. Nationwide. And much sooner than we expected.

We just spent a week operating on Kenton's brain. He came out a different machine. 🧠⚡

If you don't know him: Kenton is the AI research assistant inside Subterrix. Ask him about any piece of ground in America; vanished homesteads, drowned towns, ghost settlements and he digs.

Most AI tools were built to sound smart. We spent this week - hundreds of engineering rounds, all-nighters, rebuilding system after system making Kenton actually Einstein smart. Here's what's under the hood now:

⚡ A hard no-lying rule, enforced by machine.
Every AI you've used will invent history — fake homesteads, made-up settlers, confident garbage. We built a verification engine that takes every single claim Kenton wants to make and checks it against the actual source text he retrieved. If he didn't read it, it doesn't leave his mouth. Not a policy. A gate. Physically enforced on every answer.

⚡ He goes to the source everyone else skips.
Kenton now identifies who actually manages the land you're asking about - city parks, state agencies, conservation departments - proves the connection through official records, and reads their history pages. When Pennsylvania quietly moved its entire parks system to a new website, Kenton followed the trail on his own and found the records anyway. That's not search. That's investigation.

⚡ He works while you sleep.
This is the one that changes everything. Ask about ground he hasn't researched, and you get an honest answer immediately - then he keeps digging, on his own, for free. When he finds something worth your eyes, it lands in your inbox.

Want proof it works? During final testing we asked about vanished settlements inside Nockamixon State Park, PA. Kenton came back on his own with Tohickon Village - an entire 18th-century village: grist mill, saw mill, tannery, stone-arched bridge, houses, barns — condemned and plowed under before the lake flooded the valley. Straight from the state's own records, link included, delivered to an inbox overnight.

An entire drowned village, found while nobody was watching.

Smart AI tells you what it thinks you want to hear. Kenton shows you what the record actually says — and keeps hunting after you log off.

The surgery's done. He's awake. Ask him about your ground. 🔍
