Throwback to Spring 2001.

Long before Wave Relay® became the network trusted by military, public safety, and commercial teams around the world, it all began with two graduate students at John Hopkins University : Dr. Herbert Rubens and Dr. David Holmer.

Together, they set out to solve one of networking's toughest challenges: developing a Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) routing protocol capable of scaling under high levels of mobility.

Their initial prototypes didn't deliver the performance they envisioned. But those setbacks led to a pivotal realization: to design a scalable routing algorithm that assumes every link in the network is changing all of the time.

That insight helped lay the foundation for what would eventually become Wave Relay®.

Every breakthrough has a beginning, and sometimes it starts with a handful of students, a few laptops, and the determination to rethink what's possible.

From K9s and robotic systems to electric dirt bikes and oversized mission equipment, this specialized tandem course pushed airborne operations beyond the ordinary.

As the payloads changed from jump to jump, one requirement remained the same: maintaining reliable communications between air and ground elements.

Our employees recently came together at Chelsea Piers for Goals for Good, a charity soccer tournament where every goal scored generated a $100 donation for participating nonprofit organizations. The first- and second-place teams also earned additional donations for the charities they represented.

It was a great evening of teamwork, friendly competition, and giving back to meaningful causes.

In Part I, we showcased the breaching, CQB, and high-tempo scenarios that defined the workup.

Part II shifts the focus to what makes those operations possible: the network.

Before the training began, the team received hands-on instructions from Kyle Haydel and Nic D’Auge on Wave Relay® MANET and the MPU5, covering network architecture, integration into existing tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs), and how a self-forming, self-healing network enables resilient communications throughout close-quarters operations.

With no centralized infrastructure and no single point of failure, Wave Relay moves with the team, providing the connectivity needed in demanding operational environments.
