Over the years, the issue of data privacy has become a growing concern among the public.

For good reason.

Research has shown data breaches have increased radically in the last 10 years. What does this imply? This means that everyone who cares about data privacy and tracking of their personal information must gain valuable, knowledgeable information on what data privacy is all about and how to stay safe while using the internet.

We, at have made this our mission. By asking you to join the https://ctrl.ly/ mission, we are simply asking for you to show interest in our idea of a software application that will test an ethical ad monetization model that will allow users to take back control of their data while also only sharing data with brands they choose.

In an attempt to grow our base, we started a blog to help educate people on data privacy and tracking. This blog aims to review a few of those blogs and summarize their main points in this brief lit-review style blog: https://ctrl.ly/2021/10/01/data-tracking-and-data-privacy-blog-review/

You know how your phone responds when you say “Hey Siri” or “Hey Google”? It does that because it’s always hearing for your command. The only way it can possibly do that is by processing every word that you anyone else speaks when they’re in its vicinity. Imagine the amount of data that is being collected this way!

There are so many reasons to control your data.

What if we told you that you could see who’s tracking you right from today, and that you can toggle a switch to decide which platforms and advertisers are permitted to do it. .ly will do just that! And it will be completely free!

We, at , believe that it’s unfair for technology giants to control the reins, and we want to help you take them back. Yes, our salaries depend on advertising to you, but you get to pick those advertisers, too! This means that brands and platforms will have to earn your trust in order to be able to show content to you. And just like that, you go back from being the product, to being the customer!

That attitude of “I have nothing to hide, why should I care about my ?” is a huge mistake that can cost you a lot of strife later. Data is more than having something to hide. Here are some reasons why data privacy is important:

1. Privacy is a .

In our personal lives, we expect privacy. Likely, you don’t want people to know your salary or personal finance without your consent. Also, you probably don’t want your medical and health information to be easily accessible for anyone to view. What about the websites you visit, items you purchase, places you go?

The has changed our perceptions of privacy. Ideologically, our should be kept unless you knowingly consent to your information being collected.

2. The is full of hackers who want to steal your information.

Many people assist hackers by making their data easy to access online. It seems our government is failing us when it comes to data privacy laws.

Data is pervasive in modern society, and it is impossible to do anything without data about us being collected, tracked and used in ways we have no control over.

The only control you have on how data is created about you, is by limiting what you do online, but this is virtually impossible these days.

Every website, app, or online platform you use stores and uses your data in one way or another and it is impossible to know how each one is using it. The data you generate can be stored, shared, sold, manipulated, and even hacked. Every time you decide to use the internet or any apps you must decide the level of risk you are willing to undertake in terms of your personal data.

The myriad of data privacy laws are the only ways in which your data privacy is protected.
