Edward Norton grew up being told he was a descendant of Pocahontas. He always assumed it was just a family legend.
Then he sat down on PBS's Finding Your Roots, and historian Henry Louis Gates Jr. handed him proof.
A direct paper trail. No gaps. No guesswork.
Pocahontas, born around 1596 as Amonute, daughter of the most powerful Native American chief in the region, is Edward Norton's 12th great-grandmother. Her husband, English settler John Rolfe, is his 12th great-grandfather. The connection runs through their only child, Thomas Rolfe.
Gates put the moment in perspective by pointing out that when Pocahontas and John Rolfe married in Jamestown in 1614, William Shakespeare was still alive.
Norton was stunned. "How could you possibly determine that?" he asked. "Through the paper trail," Gates replied. "No doubt about it."
The same woman who was kidnapped by English colonists, converted to Christianity, taken to England as a symbol of the New World, and d!ed at just 20 years old in Gravesend, England before ever making it home — is the direct ancestor of one of Hollywood's most celebrated actors.
She d!ed saying: "All must die. But 'tis enough that my child liveth."
That child was Thomas Rolfe. And 400 years later, his bloodline led to Edward Norton.
Norton summed it up quietly: "It just makes you realize what a small piece of the whole human story you are."
There are over 100,000 living descendants of Pocahontas today. Most of them will never know it.

A historic first — shaped by years of work in media, advocacy, and politics.

Wab Kinew, an Anishinaabe leader from Onigaming First Nation, made history in 2023 as the first First Nations Premier of Manitoba, marking a significant moment for Indigenous representation in Canadian politics.

Before entering politics, Kinew built a public profile as a journalist, author, and broadcaster, using media to highlight Indigenous issues and perspectives. He later transitioned into public service, eventually becoming leader of the Manitoba New Democratic Party and leading it to an election victory.

As Premier, his leadership has focused on areas including healthcare, affordability, and community development, while also emphasizing Indigenous priorities. His work has included advancing conversations around reconciliation, supporting Indigenous languages and cultural recognition, and addressing long-standing gaps affecting First Nations communities in the province.

Kinew has also spoken openly about his personal journey, including overcoming past challenges, and has used that experience to advocate for youth, education, and opportunity — particularly within Indigenous communities.

His leadership reflects a broader shift —where Indigenous voices are not only represented,
but leading at the highest levels of government.
