Is the Austin self-storage market staging a comeback? In our latest update, the Radius Plus team reviews current trends across the Austin CBSA. Summer rates have outperformed last year’s figures, driven largely by a drop in new construction activity. With year-to-date new supply coming in at only 1.4% of total inventory, the market finally has space to absorb the elevated deliveries seen across 2024 and 2025. Coupled with a slowdown in new housing permits, the supply-demand dynamics are shifting in a promising direction.

Following a massive wave of new self-storage developments in 2025, the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn market is stabilizing.

Our latest Radius+ market breakdown shows that new deliveries slowed to just 1% so far in 2026, giving rental rates room to recover after last year's dip. Because upcoming construction stays well below the national average, local operators are in a great position to absorb current inventory through 2027.

Just because a multi-story facility makes sense on a spreadsheet doesn't mean it matches what local customers actually want.

As land and construction costs remain elevated, developers have increasingly turned to multi-story designs to maximize rentable square footage, even in suburban markets. But there is a growing divide between financial models and renter behavior. Data from the 2026 Radius+ Forecast reveals that suburban upper-floor units consistently require larger discounts and longer lease-up periods compared to first-floor space, as suburban renters prioritize convenience, drive-up access, and direct loading over vertical navigation.

Building for maximum density may solve the cost of land, but long-term success depends on building the specific type of storage the local market prefers.

This week, the Radius+ team analyzed the self-storage landscape across the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn, MI CBSA. After a decade of consistent growth culminating in 19 new facility deliveries in 2025, the pace of new supply has dropped sharply in 2026 with just five deliveries YTD. Rental rates have rebounded near year-ago levels after absorbing the 2025 wave, setting up a strong near-term window for local operators. Paired with steady regional business creation and a thin active construction pipeline, Detroit offers key opportunities and specific long-term trends to monitor.

Syracuse Self-Storage Snapshot: Short-Term Rate Pressure vs. Long-Term Growth

If you've noticed rental rates softening across Syracuse, you're not alone. Street rates across the CBSA have dropped for four straight weeks and are currently down about 17% from their spring highs.
Why the dip? It isn't new building activity, deliveries have been virtually non-existent over the last two years. Instead, operators are feeling the hangover from 2023 and 2024, when 345,000 sq. ft. of new space entered the market. Newer properties are offering aggressive move-in specials to reach full occupancy, putting pressure on prices across the region.

However, the bigger picture paints a very different story. Construction is officially underway on Micron’s massive facility in Clay, bringing thousands of workers to Onondaga County starting in 2027 and thousands of long-term jobs to follow. With virtually no new storage facilities in development, today's rate drop may offer a key strategic window for local investors and operators.

The Radius Plus team just completed a breakdown of the Detroit self storage market. After five consecutive years of consistent growth. including a double-digit percentage supply expansion in 2025, the construction pipeline is finally slowing down, with only four facilities currently being tracked under construction. While past supply has weighed on rental rates, ongoing manufacturing growth and new commercial activity provide solid fundamentals for the market moving forward, provided pipeline growth remains controlled.

If you're only looking at advertised web rates, you're missing the bigger picture in self-storage revenue management. Bargain rates are often strategic tenant lures, and top-tier pricing isn't always a sign of a high-performing property.

Much like airlines and hotels, modern storage operators need a multi-layered approach. Our newest blog post breaks down how aligning your pricing with local demand, unit mix, timing, and market supply leads to sustainable growth.

Is the Syracuse, NY self-storage market flashing a short-term warning or a long-term opportunity? The latest data from the Radius+ team shows street rates reaching their lowest point in our 18-month tracking series, sitting about 17% below their early spring peak. While seasonality plays a role, peak summer leasing failed to deliver its typical lift, largely because ten facilities delivered during the heavy supply wave of 2023–2024 are still aggressively pricing to fill up.

However, the supply picture moving forward is starkly different. Following 2024's decade-high deliveries, construction has hit a wall with zero facilities added in 2025 and minimal square footage coming online this year. Meanwhile, Micron's historic megafab project in Clay is moving ahead faster than anticipated, bringing 3,000 to 4,000 construction workers on site next year and 9,000 direct jobs down the line. For a market of 140 facilities, this setup points to near-term pricing pressure followed by a significant demand wave.
