A letter back from a fellow Pratt Institute student who attended decades earlier than my own time at Pratt. I sent Paul Rand my thesis paper, and he actually sent me a reply. When I saw the Westin, CT address on the envelope I carefully pulled out of my Willoughby dorm mailbox. My mother suggested that I call to thank him, which I thought was crazy, but did it anyway. He invited me up to Yale for a Shigeo Fukuda lecture, and when there, told me about The Brissago Switzerland Program. I attended that program after graduation in May (it was my graduation gift, although my parents didn’t understand why I would want more school). Rand courtesy was super-professional and changed the course of my design life.

SHE STOPPED AMMUNITION WITH HER ART.

Reportage artist Isabelle Brourman presented her work to Pratt COMD students this evening. The link shows ICE officers in Minnesota shooting rubber bullets at her, piercing her drawing board. Isabelle is a 2019 Pratt MFA painting graduate.

Ray Barber was my type and typography teacher while a student at Pratt. And as i remember, he was always positive and encouraging. When I realized that he illustrated the Saturday Night Fever logo I couldn’t wait to tell my disco friends back home. Ray eventually chaired the undergraduate communications design department until his untimely death. This is a site I just found in tribute to him. RIP

Pratt COMD student ’23 Papi Diva is a transgressive Graphic Designer and Creative Director designing solutions that embrace the Latin/Black LGBTQ+ mind, body, and spirit. Papi offered the class a transparent lecture on shifting perspectives through an insightful step-by-step on how he pitched himself for GAYLETTER and landed a position as a Social Media Assistant without undergoing the traditional hiring process.

Art director and designer Michelle Dimuzio visit to our Typography and Information Design class. Michelle specializes in hand-lettering and illustration for that feels real, even on a screen. Originally from Metro-Detroit, she began as a studio art major at the University of Michigan, but a typography class left her completely obsessed with design. She is an art director at www.Spotco.com, specializing in Broadway and Off-Broadway advertising for shows that include Hamilton, Kinky Boots, and American Utopia. www.michelledimuzio.com/

This video features famed graphic designer, George Tscherny (1924–2023), and is one of twelve as part of “Guide to Graphic Design” . George expresses his process in the phrase “Make it happen, let it happen” — it’s beautiful to watch him say it. I worked as George’s intern back in the day through Pratt where he also studied decades before me. He was a true NYC gem. RIP George.
