Tough Mudder: Adventure On
How do you refresh a brand to speak to a broader audience while making sure to stay reverent to its existing fans and iconic branding? First, we changed the playing field, moving Tough Mudder from an obstacle event to an adventure while keeping its grit, camaraderie, and teamwork.

Once we completed the strategy, we refreshed the logo and created new brand elements, including sub-brands for race distances, signage, location adventure icons, email, and social media templates. As we say, “take a journey outside your comfort zone and discover what you’re made of. Tough Mudder–Adventure On.”

Ozzy & Kazoo: For Every Wag and Whisker
Doublespace created a new pet brand for SUMR, a leading juvenile products manufacturer. Our work began with coming up with the brand name, Ozzy & Kazoo, and creating its mascot, OK Pet. Made up of a bespoke wordmark, a playful palette of navy with strong pops of color, and smile-inducing pet portraits, this new brand aims to resonate with all pet parents. Once all the elements were created, we created packaging for retail and eCommerce and rules for how the OK Pet mascot got applied to the product: our next assignment, website, and social media.

Volofit: Break Up with Your Boring Gym
Volofit is the future of studio fitness — a new functional HITT fitness concept that changes daily to deliver optimal whole-body performance.Volofit came to Doublespace in 2020 for brand and marketing support services to help commercialize and launch its new fitness brand—and the first studio launched in Spring 2021.

Throughout 2021, our work included refining the value proposition definition, marketing planning, development of marketing assets, studio design, signage, website development, partner marketing, customer acquisition campaigns, franchise sales campaigns, and social media – both paid and organic.

DOUBLESPACE 2021 HIGHLIGHTS /2

Franklin: Educating Innovators — Shaping the Future
In 2021, we worked with Dwight School to position, promote, and brand their new high school in Jersey City, Franklin School. Franklin is reimaging high school, making it more entrepreneurial, innovative, and focused on shaping the future. An alternative to the traditional high school curriculum, it’s home to a Maker Lab as the center of the experience. Students have the freedom to chart their course with a flexible curriculum that empowers them to pursue their passions, develop real-world readiness, and have agency over their future.

Y-NYC
Doublespace happily supports the Y and its mission by creating communications for its membership efforts, promoting its fundraising goals, and its commitment to social justice. And in 2021, we’ve stepped up to help them with website content, email, and their move to SalesForce, working as an extension of their in-house team.

Countryside: Custom Made Simple.
A cabinet manufacturing company in Wisconsin needed to articulate better what it stood for, refine what it looked like, and create a web presence to assist designers and clients in seeing what’s possible. Building on its great reputation, the team crafted the positioning (Custom made simple.) and created an updated look and feel that’s currently being applied to all of their materials and phase one of its website.

As we begin 2022, we want to focus on what is possible.

In 1979, Doublespace created a magazine, not knowing what was possible. In 1982, with lots of prodding from family and friends, we started a design company, not knowing what was possible. In 1994, we got a call from a client who asked us to design a website; we had no idea what we were doing and did not know what was possible. In 1999, we raised $6 million, created an incubator, and started six digital businesses from scratch, not knowing what was possible. In 2008, we started social media accounts for our clients, not knowing what was possible.

Today, our team of strategists, designers, coders, writers, marketers, thinkers and doers start each day with a purpose, imagining what is possible.

Join us and celebrate 2022 as the year of possibility; nothing is impossible.

Full of for all the incredible people with me on this journey, including everyone at to family, friends, clients, partners, collaborators, and our compatriots and co. Giving thanks to the people we interact with daily, people who make us smarter, push us harder, and allow us to share our creative vision–all while having fun and a good laugh. It's been a year of early mornings (yes, at times I do send emails at 4 am) and long nights, conversations with people from different perspectives who push us to stretch our wings, question what is best, and do what's right in communicating what is important. And to the fact that knows what it means to be a mensch.

Sunday was an incredible day for NYC and the 30,000 runners who crossed the TCS NYC Marathon finish line for the 50th running of the race. It was fantastic to finally see the work done by the and , who worked diligently over the last three years to make the 50th running of the TCS NYC Marathon special. Doublepace created the logo in 2018 along with the medal, bib, finish line inspiration, and guidelines used by the NYRR team to produce all signage and collateral.

A great team effort, with a fantastic outcome.

The marathon is always a day of incredible grit, strength, camaraderie, and celebration. NYC is back, and it was great to see and hear.

It was a moment of pride when I opened a package from last week which contained the tome, WITH EYES OPENED: CRANBROOK ACADEMY OF ART SINCE 1932—scrolling through the pages I can across the Doublespace spread, featuring the second and third covers of Fe**sh: The Magazine of the Material World. The work was done by David Sterling and me right after we left Cranbrook Academy of Art.

For those of you who don't know, Fe**sh: The Magazine of the Material World gave birth to doublespace. After listing ourselves on the masthead multiple times, David Sterling and I felt that we needed to create an entity that was the creative force behind the publication; we named that company . It was an early morning after a late night, and we were pretty spaced out; and at Cranbrook, we created the graphic design style of letter spacing type. Doublespace seemed like the perfect name.

As I reflect on my education, Cranbrook and all the people I studied with: Michael McCoy, Katherine McCoy, and Tom Wedell, Charles Rozier, , , , Lucille Tenazas, and more, certainly changed the trajectory of my career.

Fe**sh has been published in numerous books and publications, featured in many courses on graphic design history, and is the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum and now Cranbrook Academy of Art Museum.

Thanks to Michael and Kathy McCoy for gifting the two issues of Fe**sh to the permanent collection and Lorraine Wild for a beautiful book design.

Tonight was a magical night. As the full harvest moon rose over Central Park, and I stood listening and dancing to Patty Smith as she belted out songs that filled my heart in the late 70s and early 80s. At the same time, texted me that the Synthetics Issue of Fe**sh: The Magazine of the Material World (circa Fall 1980) was featured in the Cranbook exhibit, With Eyes Open Cranbrook Academy of Art since 1932.

On stage with Patty was long-time collaborator Lenny Kaye. Susan reminded me that we had interviewed Lenny Kaye about his record collection for that issue of Fe**sh. Full circle!

For those of you who don't know, Fe**sh: The Magazine of the Material World gave birth to Doublespace. After listing ourselves on the masthead multiple times, we felt that we needed to create an entity that was the creative force behind the publication; we named that company Doublespace. Fe**sh has been published in numerous books and publications, featured in many courses on graphic design history, and is the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum.

As I begin to write the book about Doublespace, Fe**sh will be prominently featured, and many stories of the people, the projects, and all the things we learned along the way.
