HDDs aren't fading out — they're more relevant than ever.

As AI workloads continue to grow, so does the demand for high-capacity, cost-efficient storage. Data centers processing and retaining massive datasets rely on HDDs precisely because they offer a level of scale and cost-per-TB that other storage technologies simply can't match. Today, HDDs store approximately 80% of the world's data in the cloud and in data centers. A signal that in the age of AI, reliable high-capacity storage isn't going away. It's becoming more critical.

Last week, we had the privilege of celebrating the National Winners of the Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision competition in Washington, D.C.

From Capitol Hill and the House Science Fair to media interviews at the National Press Club and the ExploraVision Science Showcase, students shared innovative ideas that demonstrated creativity, ingenuity, and a passion for solving real-world challenges.

Did you know? Toshiba is the first in the storage industry to verify 12-disk stacking technology for hard drives — a significant milestone in the pursuit of higher capacity and greater reliability for data centers.

By combining this advancement with MAMR (Microwave-Assisted Magnetic Recording) technology, Toshiba aims to introduce 40TB-class HDDs in 2027. It's the latest example of a long history of Toshiba's "Firsts" in the storage industry.
