Signing a cyber insurance application this fall? Read the questions twice.

When a small business gets cyber insurance denied, the deciding factor is often the application itself: technical questions answered by someone who couldn't verify them. "Do you use MFA?" means enforced on every account. "Do you back up?" means a documented restore. CISA calls phishing-resistant MFA the gold standard for MFA.

An accurate no beats an optimistic yes, because a wrong yes can be contested after a claim. Bring your IT provider in when the renewal notice arrives, not the week it's due.

VJNetworks explains what each question is really asking.

Is your accounting firm paying for Microsoft 365 security it never switched on?

Microsoft 365 setup for accounting firms starts with the license you already own. Business Premium includes Microsoft Entra ID P1, which includes Conditional Access, plus Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 and Intune. Most firms don't need E5. They need those settings turned on and documented, which costs nothing extra on Business Premium.

One habit to fix first: keep client workpapers in SharePoint, not in each preparer's OneDrive, so they don't leave with the person.

VJNetworks walks through the first-week settings and what to skip.

Filling out a cyber insurance renewal this year? The questions changed.

Cyber insurance requirements now center on three controls. The federal StopRansomware Guide calls for phishing-resistant MFA, EDR on all assets, and offline, encrypted backups that are tested regularly, and insurers ask about the same things.

The usual gaps: MFA only on the admin account, antivirus mistaken for EDR, and nightly backups nobody has test-restored. Insurers weigh all three, and two out of three doesn't clear the bar. Start a few weeks before the form is due.

VJNetworks explains what insurers check and how to close the gaps before you apply.

Did moving to Microsoft 365 make your data Microsoft's problem? Not according to Microsoft.

Under the Microsoft 365 shared responsibility model, Microsoft secures the platform. Your data, accounts, tenant settings, and backup stay with you. Deleted SharePoint files are kept for up to 93 days, and a permanently deleted email for 14 days by default.

Microsoft even sells backup as a separate product. That tells you where the line is.

A good first step: compare your enabled accounts with payroll and switch off the ones that don't match.

VJNetworks explains what stays yours and what to fix first.

Signed the lease on a second office? Your IT quote just changed shape.

IT cost for multiple business locations comes in two layers: a per-seat cost that follows headcount and a per-site cost that follows addresses. Managed IT with VJNetworks starts at $995 a month.

The second office is usually the expensive one, because it forces the identity, networking, and remote access work a single office can skip. After that, site three is a copy of site two.

One more thing to settle before you compare quotes: is this one company with several offices, or several companies?

Is your QuickBooks Desktop discontinued? If it's the 2023 version, yes.

Intuit ended support for QuickBooks Desktop 2023 after May 31, 2026. That means no live technical support, no Desktop Payroll or bank feeds, and no critical security updates. The software still opens, which is why the date is easy to miss.

The bigger question is where the company file lives next. Your options are QuickBooks Online, Desktop Enterprise, or Desktop hosted in Azure, and the right one depends on what else runs on that office server.

VJNetworks explains each path and what to check before you choose.

Opening a new job site this quarter? The availability lookup on the parcel address can mislead you.

The FCC's 2026 broadband report says 96.9% of Americans have access to fixed terrestrial broadband at 100/20 Mbps. That figure counts Broadband Serviceable Locations, and the FCC's definition leaves out empty lots and houses still under construction.

So plan the connection before the trailer lands. Put a wireless link in on day one, order any wired circuit during preconstruction, and keep sub crews and visitors on a separate guest network.

VJNetworks explains how to plan a construction company field office network.

Bidding public work this year? The IT requirements arrive in the contract, usually somewhere past page forty of the bid package.

On federal jobs, FAR 52.204-21 lists 15 basic safeguarding controls, from verified sign-ins to patching to wiping old drives before disposal. Subcontractors who hold project files inherit them through the subcontract, including the framing sub with your drawings on a personal laptop.

Most firms already do much of it. The gap is usually evidence, and evidence is what a prime or an agency asks for.

VJNetworks breaks down IT compliance for construction companies bidding government contracts.

Windows Server 2016 receives its last security update on January 12, 2027. Nothing will stop working that day, which is exactly why the date gets missed.

Microsoft does sell Extended Security Updates for up to three years, but for Server 2016 they require Software Assurance or an equivalent subscription. Most small-business servers came with an OEM license from Dell or HP and don't have it.

Check the paperwork, list what runs on the box, and ask your software vendors what they'll support in 2027.

When your IT person resigns, who can still sign in to your Microsoft 365 admin center? Most owners find out the week someone gives notice.

Microsoft recommends fewer than five Global Administrators, and CISA's baseline sets a minimum of two. A single admin account means one resignation can leave the business unable to change its own settings.

Two more checks are worth five minutes this week. Whose phone answers the admin sign-in prompt? Whose name is on the domain registration? Both should belong to the company.

VJNetworks explains who owns the company Microsoft account and where each control should sit.
