After 23 years and hundreds of courses, the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute–functioning out of a few cramped street-level desks–finally has a complementary home, towering some 70 feet in the air, embellished with state-of-the-art amenities.

To facilitate in it’s launch, the JLI created a program with the goal to share it’s space and provide a peak inside the “boiling room” of where it all goes down, making it a go-to stop for tourists, members, or the curious passerby that interacted with one of the many touchpoints by JLI.

Named appropreiately, Experience JLI HQ; meet the people packaging ancient Jewish teachings for today’s world.

Legendary art director Helmut Krone, famous for his 1959 Volkswagen “Think small” ad, once said: “I’ve spent my whole life fighting logos. A logo says, 'I am an ad. Turn the page.” (What??? “You need to add the logo!” they say, “make it bigger!” they ruthlessly continue…).

More than a logo slapped on the bottom of a page, it’s the distinctive choices which are deployed relentlessly that make the identity indelible.

This was the inspiration behind the ad campaign for the Outsmarting Antisemitism course. With a variety of ads, all different in nature, but with strong consistent characteristics through typeface and color (and good copy), the brand was in motion.

In the words of Michael Beirut: “Consistency is responsive and vibrant”.

A centuries old pattern returning; Antisemitism.

Outsmarting Antisemitism is a four-part course from the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute on the absurdity of antisemitism and how to beat it with purpose, positivity, and pride. It takes this dark subject on squarely, with a sense of unabashed optimism, profound faith, and a distinctly Jewish approach.

It was an important project to be part of, and an opportunity to position a highly reputable course on such a vital and timely topic in a bold and memorable way.

With a combination of imagery, color and type, we sought out to create an aesthetic that can represent the archetype of the Hero. The logotype–bold and unapologetic–is appropriately even in length, making for the perfect wordmark to carry the title. For the symbol, we wanted a device that can be utilized in a larger role, a co-lead on all marketing material, by combining powerful imagery of evil in the shape of shredded paper, facilitating the title accordingly.

In the next few posts, I hope to illustrate a partial picture of the overall branding.

The course was wildly successful, attended globally by thousands, and is accredited by the NY Medical College, CME and CLE.

Somewhere between a WIP and RIP.

This is an app icon and brand concept for what’s in the works to be a sort of “super app” (minus the commerce part of it) for a circle of organizations.

Finally, I had the chance to go back a bit and JPEGify some work from this flagship course: This Can Happen; A credible case for feeling good about the future.

The deliverables were vast, and there is no way to wrap it up in one scroll-downs view, but I’ll try to give a fair depiction over a few posts.

Scroll right to see the brochure, where can you can squint and read what the lessons were about, and the custom icon set to amplify the copy.

Hope you enjoy!

At bat: Menorah packaging for the Mitzvah Society “Ambassadors of Light” (literally) campaign.

And yes, it includes the candles.

The campaign had dual structure of both lighting and sharing a light, hence the ambassador hashtag. These little guys were the culprit of 100,000+ doing the Mitzvah since Chanukah 2021.
